Tobacco, not crack.

I smoke cigars but can’t abide cigarettes.

I like the smell of pipe tobacco, and I bought a pipe a few years ago, but I couldn’t smoke it.

I couldn’t get the tobacco to sustain any burn / burningness.

I realise that pipes need more relighting than a cigar, but when I tried it, the tobacco went out after each poof.

I tried packing it more loosely, but no luck.

Then, after that, I tried packing it more tightly, but that didn’t work either.

What was I doing wrong?

Was it my fault, or did I have the wrong sort of pipe, or does it matter, or was it to do with the way it was that I had done my packing?

Packing.

Is that the right word. Sounds strange now I re-read it. Packing.

Thought pipe smoking went out of fashion years decades ago?

I'd stick with cigars. Just my 2 p.

Hmm I'm also interested in this.

It means one can use the word "shag" as well.

No idea what it means though.

It was a very brief and unforgivably wky affectation while at university. Along with tortoise shell spectacles and a cravat.

I shudder to think on it now.

However, as death-deservingly spacky as that was, at least I never had any difficulty with the complex task of operating such a fiendish bit of technology.

Smoke it outdoors or leave it in your mouth. The constant airflow will keep it lit.

Exactly.

I had this idea that I would re-introduce them, make a name for myself.

I could picture myself in a club, with a corn cob pipe sticking out of my mouth, like Popeye, and I'd be on the dancefloor, jiving, with my pipe.

But like I said, I couldn't work out how to smoke the things.

Once at professor college I had the idea that I could make a name for myself by running everywhere. I though I would run all the way to my professor lectures, then run all the way home, then run to the shops, then run to the pub.

"Ooh look," people would say, "there goes The Runninng Professor".

Maybe I'd even appear on "Nationwide".

In the end I didn't bother, but I've often wondered what would have happened if I'd made a name for myself by running everywhere or smoking a pipe whilst dancing in a nightclub.

Or 'rough shag' if you're not feeling quite so picky.

And you can get those lovely flavoured tobaccos too.

Like rum flavoured, and vanilla.

My dad used to smoke a pipe. He's dead.

Only one time in my life did I ever meet a geezer who "took snuff".

It was when I worked in a pub and he was an old South African geezer with a beard.

How "from history" is that?

Anyone ever met anyone who took snuff?

Or chewed tobacco?

Pretty much the most bizzare thread. PP, did you have a little smoke this morning?

I couldn't. Not smoking it anyway.

I've always thought that once I retire I'd like to take up pipe smoking. I smoked cigarettes for about 9 years until New Years Day 2009 then knocked it on the head. But a pipe does appear more sophisticated. I can imagine sitting out in the garden with a pipe. Watching the world go by.

Sad, in a way, that it's gone out of fashion.

And no one can wear a hat properly anymore / these days.

I have a couple of Hookha pipes. They're realy pleasant as the tobacco is flavoured. I've got apple, cherry, banana, peach and melon to name a few, but the variety is seemingly endless.

It also leaves a pleasant arome so SWMBO lets me smoke it in the house.

They're not very portable though and setting it up initially can be a bit of a chore.

Let us not forget that the decline in the popularity of the smoking jacket coincides almost exactly with the rise of islamic terrorism, reality television and the literary career of Jeffrey Archer.

The unpalatable and undeniable conclusion being that we have brought these horrors upon ourselves due to our sartorial laxness.

I have a pipe. I don't smoke it all that often and it does take some practice to get it going properly. Expect to light it a few times as the bowl warms up. Once the bowl is warm then you shouldn't have any problems keeping it lit.

Mmmm, shisha pipes are gorgeous, encountered them in Egypt and especially loved the apple tobacco, they're so smooth.

I used to smoke a pipe, along with bongs, buckets, drainers and lungs
