Years ago, infact I don't usually answer the landline, until I hear who's calling.

Giving out your wobbler number every time you answer it would have cost a fortune when they first came out! When I was a lad, you'd only need to say the last 4 numbers, where as now, as we've become a much more transient nation, you're mates no longer live in the same street/village or even town, so just saying the last few would make you sound like a loon!

Erm, so to answer your question, for me it was about 1995.

"Hello" is a word which was invented, or at least pressed into service just for answering the telephone. Many languages have something similar such as the Japanese msui-musi .

Alexander Grahame bell wanted Ahoy Yoy, which is what Mr Burns in The Simpsons says.

My dad still does it on the landline - he doesn't know his mobile number to do the same hehe

Family friend used to give the name of the village they lived in rather than the number which I found odd!

Why would you tell them the number? They have just rung it so they ought to know?

Not if they'd rung the wrong number?
Why is it when you Ring the Wrong number they always answer?

I normally say 'Trumpton Fire Station, hello!' or 'Darroughby 384'. Well, I don't actually.
