Piece on the news just now, featured a girl who was spending £500 a week on her drugs. OK, I can understand how a young and reasonably good looking girl might get that kind of money together, but what about the ugly ones, and the blokes? Or are the figures for weekly spend given by the media either inflated or the amount that the addict would have liked to have been able to spend?

.. if anything £500 is a low figure. Prostitution, theft, handling stolen goods, dealing drugs, fraud, begging ,all the usual suspects.

Theft mostly.

If you have no fear of the law whatsoever, no fear of consequences and no possible threat to yourself, and a whole day to waste as opposed to working for a living, its very easy to go round nicking a car stereo here, a mobile phone there and selling it on.

£50 here and £100 there is good money tax free frown

Not sure if its just a thing up here, but registered jakies & junkies get a drink/ drugs allowance, depending on the classification of their habit depends on their allowance.

But then they need to fence the stuff, and I guess they are lucky to get 10% of the value.

You don't need to have money to have a drug habit anymore. £3 for a line of coke.

I might add that most addicts are entitled to (and on) a lot of benefits. I have worked closely with our local shelter and two lads were on £1000+ a month. ALL of it went on drugs and they still came begging for clothes.

A lot of drug dealers will take stolen goods as payment. Mostly though your average junkie spends most of the day shop lifting, robbing houses, letting pervy old men jump on them for 20quid ago and of course mugging old ladies.

EFA biggrin

OH has a friend in rehab, she manged to hide(ish) her smack addiction for 13 years and held down a job for the entire time. I know a very well thought of soliciter who had a crack cocaine addiction for nearly a decade. If you have never been addicted to anything you wouldn't understand, but it was described to me by the OH's friend in the clearest way.

her:"you smoke don't you"
me:"yep, so what"
Her:"I bet no matter how broke you are you can always afford some ciggies."

That's an over-simplification. I like weed, I'd never suck a cock for a baggy though. I used to smoke cigarettes, I'd never steal to buy them. I've partook in a few lines of coke, never paid for it nor considered pimping myself out to get it. Proper addiction isn't cigarettes, I've given them up easily as has my mother. Real addiction will make you do things you'd never do otherwise. Like steal, prostitute or ignore the pleas and needs of loved ones. That is something that those of us fortunate enough to have never experienced will find incredibly hard to understand.

Prime example why giving them the drugs they crave on the NHS would stop a st load of burglary/dodgy practices happening which ultimately fund underground drug dealers. If you grew/manufactured drugs legally, I bet you could supply 1000s of addicts for pennies.

A lot of them at first run up a debt with their dealer, all nice and happy at first until he decided he wants paying, their now addicted and he'll kneecap them if they don't come up with some form of payment, hence theft, prostitution etc.

Only £20 you say? I know of a certain tyre fitter who certainly needs to take advantage of such offers.

they get x2 benifit payments of around £60 each per week instead of 1 per fortnight for everyone else. purely on account of having an addiction ( drinks / drugs / etc )
