A Vtech laptop always keeps baby entertained - linky
Fairly inexpensive, my godson (Thomas) loves his, and it's VTAK YO!
I bought this for Thomas - linky
I know it says 2 years plus but once they start walking (about 14 months in Thomas' case) it's good to go. Plus you get the joy of building it.
While we built that trike thingy Thomas managed to open one of the boxes, climb inside, shut it, get stuck, and start crying. More and more like his dad everyday.

Assuming at least one parent doesn't work but has a car I usually get a season ticket to something like a local zoo or interactive farm. Educational day out enjoyable by both parent and child and saves the kid having too many of the same toy as everyone gets a baby walker or similar.
Our little boy got something like this:
http://www.toystoreuk.co.uk/ferrari-california-ele...
He was too small to use it at 1 year old, but it got loads of use once he was a little bit older. And he's a total car fiend now, so it did its job.

Agreed not a lot of point giving fancy toys to a 1 year old - he/she will be just as happy playing with the empty box - if not more so. http://www.toystoreuk.co.uk/ferrari-california-ele...

Something for the future, whether one year or several years away will be more appreciated eventually.

A bottle of Port.
At 1 you have no idea about birthdays and it will be exciting enough.
At 18 you will have a nice vintage bottle to really 'appreciate'
Along similar lines (perhaps less fun), how about a nice piece of gold?At 1 you have no idea about birthdays and it will be exciting enough.

Something like this:

Will apppreciate in value and can be flogged when he's 18 and spent on the latest designer drugs of the day.
