Why is it that some people who come to work always have something wrong with them? For example, a colleague of mine always turns up late with a bad cough/some other illness e.g. headache. They stroll in and make out that it has been such a challenge to get to work. Add to this the constant spluttering and coughing and it soon gets silly.

Also, why do some people let a little bit of promotion and power go to their head? Another colleague was recently promoted and said person's ego has increased massively. It has got to the point now where this person will not visit another of our sites unless a specific make of company car is avaialble. They spend ages writing an email that is a couple of paragraph's long and their people skills can be likened to that of a salt mine overlord/team leader. And they turn up late constantly!

Has anyone else noticed bizarre behaviour from colleagues like this? Sort of makes you wonder why they simply cannot just come to work and get on with it. Or is it just where I work?

Has it crossed your mind that the ill person might actually be sick?

You could try either;

a) vitamin C supplements
b) being less annoying, perhaps by buying teas / coffees for your work colleagues regularly for a month or so

Yes, but sick all of the time? We all get run down and ill, but ever since i've known this person they have had a cough.

Nah, didn't help, but thanks.

We don't buy the teas/coffees, we just make them for each other. smile

this may come as a shock to you, but there are some illnesses that "last a lifetime" - hell some even shorten a persons life expectancy considerably!!! I know, shock isn't it. I hear the clever medical people are trying to find a cure for death though so hopefully they'll sort out your irksome colleague.

I sympathise with the OP. Whilst there are people out there that are just unlucky, or have a genuine chronic condition, there are plenty of others that take the piss.

This can either be by knowing how the system works and milking it for all it's worth, or not taking adequate care of themselves, (eating healthily, getting enough rest etc.)

It's difficult to spot them at interview, and it's a bugger to get rid of them when they start to play games.

The situation is a mine field too because if you look after an employee properly with a good work ethic, they will repay that loyalty.

Whilst that may be true, there are far, far, far many more sufferers of "impretendingimillsoicandoasicky" syndrome...

Yes, I do apologise for my inconvenience on this earth, unfortunately I ticked the wrong box when the questionnaire came around asking if I'd like Crohn's Disease symptoms in my 20's or not.

I didn't realise the results of my oversight at birth, inconveniencing people by actually having to have one or 2 days every few month because I'm crippled in bed or coming into work and actually feeling like st, so not being the best company.

I have staff who are exhausted. So they drink Redbull/Relentless etc..

...they then get stressed...so they take Calms (sp?...

The Relentless and Calms sit next to each other on their desk. People like to be ill, it means they have something to talk about, so far there is not a cure for Attention Whoritus.

Your workmate isn't Emsman perhaps?

Edit: Not suggesting Emsman is as the OP describes but let's be honest, he doesn't have the best of luck in the health department.

Having a step-daughter with extremely serious Crohn's Disease, I would hope that a work colleague like Funkyrobot would be a tad more understanding.

My wife also worked with people who had Cerebral Palsey and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The chap with the latter actually died in his 30s.

So there are genuinely ill people in the workplace - doing their best NOT to be a liability to society. Try to cut them a little slack.

Someone i work with is constantly ill / at the doctors etc.
I reckon they must have a day off every 2-3 weeks, it's never more than a day at a time though but i guess it all adds up.
They also disappear for a couple of hours to go to the doctors.
Completely takes the piss, they did'nt come in the other day until lunchtime cos they didnt get to sleep till 7.30 this morning!
I feel like st & i'm tired this mornign but i still got up & came in!
Funnily enough it's always women aswell!

I sympathise with you, I really do. I don't think I explained myself well enough in my original post. I have no problem with people who may have lifelong and chronic illnesses. I understand that this isn't pleasant and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

My problem is with the people who are constantly 'sick' but not properly ill. You know, the sort who constantly coughs and splutters or who has a constant headache, yet won't see a doc about it. I'm sorry if i've offended genuine sufferers.

It really irks me that people make up so many illnesses all of the time and play the system. Lets face it, who wishes they really were ill! It isn't pleasant.

Eric, I have no problem with people who are genuinely ill and get on with it. I admire these people. You get all sorts of people who are disabled or live with chronic conditions and they get on with it. I admire these people!

My beef is with the sort of person who makes out they are ill when they are simply putting it on. Really, really annoying.

Do you know for a fact what is wrong / not wrong with them, or are you just presuming based on the fact they "look" okay?

Funkyrobot is talking about the kind who are constantly ill but drag themselves into the office anyway. Leave management practices in a lot of firms discourage people staying away with minor but contagious diseases, so they come in and spread them around. Personally, if at all possible I think it makes sense to make people in that situation work from home for a day or two.

Relatives who have school/nursery age children are always catching things off their kids, who catch things off the other kids, and when they visit us they always seem to leave us with some nasty bug or other. Maybe that's what's going on there?
