Yesterday, my partner went to Manchester with her mother on th tram. My partner is due to give birth next Saturday, so is struggling to get around, but can manage it with frequent rests and a brew break here and there (and yes, before anyone asks, the baby is mine)

So they get on the tram, which is full, and go to see if they can find an empty seat. There are no seats available so my partner asks a man if he would mind giving up his seat as she is 9 months pregnant and needs a rest.

His answer... I get off in 2 stops, you can have my seat then!

Now im not being funny, but what the fk! You can clearly see the state she is in. If that was me id have offered my seat straight away, before she even had to ask.

Is this a selfish sign of the times, or was my partner wrong to ask for his seat? Either way, I think its a fking disgrace.

So, if you were that man, hope you had a good tram ride.

I believe in karma.

Nothing wrong with her asking for a seat, although of course she shouldn't have had to.

inconsiderate tosser. I offered my seat to a preggers lady a couple of months back on the tube, and she proceeded to tell me in a raised voice " I'm not a fking invalid you know"

You cant win

I dont, but surely he would have said "sorry love, I have a bad leg and cant stand" or something similar.

As for your personal view, if your happy to watch a pregnant woman struggle to stand on a moving tram then thats up to you.

She should count herself lucky.

In the Big Smoke we would have elbowed her in the ribs as we barged passed her to get on the train then thrust our armpit into her face for the entire journey, probably stepping on her toes or stumbling into her as the train stopped as we were too busy reading the Metro to hold on.

Then obviously we would gently nudge her out as we tried to get off the tube. Its at this point where a fellow Londoner would begin to elbow her in the ribs as they get on. And such is the cycle.

I get up to offer my seat, hold doors, ask if they need a hand getting up stairs with a pram ( not just because they are huge) and generally try to be as helpful as is reasonable. Now I am no old timer but I am amazed by the amount of people who dont even think about it.

I have offered to help a women once with her pram up some stairs and with the look i got you would have thought I suggested a 3some with her and her dad, snapped at me and then the not so young mum (mid 30's) would rather struggle rather than take a little help very strange.

In all fairness some people are just rude, I was killing some time in HMV the other day and 2 paramedics were walking up the aisle with a girl of about 16-17, she had her arm in a sling and had obviously been crying and probably in a lot of pain, I moved to one side to let them through only to be almost barged out he way by a women of about 50 while she tried to force past the 3 of them, I was gob smacked someone could be that inconsiderate.

Then you see all the other folk my age sitting on the 4 seater part, when there's only 2 of orange faced minks, and putting there feet up.
It really annoys, they should be respecting other users on the bus, well everywhere to be honest, holding doors open, etc.

Ah, but you do run the risk of offering your seat to a "pregnant" lady that isn't.

Take Jimmy Carr's advice and never ask: "Better a pregnant woman standing up than a fat bird sitting down crying. . . ." hehe

IMO it's your fault for making someone who is 9 months pregnant use public transport instead of driving her about!

That's nothing - occurs on a daily basis.
You also get tossers smoking upstairs, getting lippy & violently aggresive if someone says something about it. Seen a few people beaten up over it. Others too scared to intervene/look.

Public transport sucks on all counts.

And if someone had gotten up and offered her a seat right away without needing to be asked, where would the OP's rant and the state of the Nation be then?
