What is the best simple bit of life advice anyone has ever given you?

My old Dad, who was a foundry labourer all his life, said; "Never do a job that any bloke with a big hammer can do". This has stood me in good stead along with something my old boss said: "Always treat the people at the bottom of the corporate ladder well, because they can make your life easy or hard, and may be your boss one day".

What great simple advice have you had which has turned out to be golden?

Treat others as you want to be treated by them.

Don't be overawed by superiors in companies. They are still human beings.

God gave you two ears and one mouth, you will find life a lot easier if you use them in that proportion.

Know when you are well off. I can think of at least two jobs I should have stayed in, but didn't realise at the time and left.

My introduction to big corporate life included the line "do it until you get told off twice" the rational being that it really was meant if they said it twice!!

Worked very effectively for me...

''Always retain a sense of perspective''

Has helped me stand back on a number of occasions, take a breather and then look at the bigger picture or put things into proportion.

Professor at uni when I mumbled some excuse about not getting some work in on time: "I always know I'm dealing with a failure when I hear excuses - people who make excuses aren't accepting they failed and therefore won't take responsibility for it and avoiding it happening again". I've never made an excuse since and I can't bear people who do. He did me a huge favour although he did remain an unpleasant prcensoredck. smile

my grandad told me when i was 15 'your old man knows nothing now, but when you are 21 he will have learnt a great deal'.

i thought the old duffer had lost it completely, but when i was 19 i realised what he meant, and since then i have always looked to see if other people knew how to do something rather than re-inventing the wheel. smile

My old boss told me 'To give the hardest work to laziest people. They will find the easiest way to do it, you can then tell everyone else to do it the same way'.

Yes it was after I was complaining about getting all the st jobs.

When you've made a decision, don't look back. (Me)
Never trust a black and white dog. (My Dad)
Don't waste your life on internet forums. (My mum or my missus, probably)

And finally:

Never assume. It makes an ass out of you and me (An old boss. I told him it appeared that somebody else had already assumed before I got there. Then I resigned)

My Dad once said "If you want to do something, do it now as one day you will wake up and be too old." That is so true and has come back to bite him on the arse.
