Wikipedia has a fairly good primmer on the state of chaos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Drug_War

Okay, is any of this info actually first hand?

I was there for 2 weeks, and had an armed driver (which we'd have for the full year).

Smog has dropped 75% since 1990, and i barely noticed it (and i get bad smog allergies in Sheffield, so it can't be that bad now).

There was a Policeman on every street corner, so i felt pretty safe to be honest.

The need for an armed driver perhaps suggests it may have a few problems??

I have only ever been over there to visit friends.

Friends have a nice apartment in a reasonable area, but I know it certainly isn't cheap. They seem to like living there for work and social scene.

What time of year were you there for there to be no smog? It does get very bad, especially with what it carries.

+1!

What do you mean about 'what it carries'?

I'm genuinely interested!

We were there in February.

The armed driver was purely because it was paid for by the company.

As will everything for the year - accomodation, car, driver (if req'd), food, internet access etc etc. It would basically be a free 12 months.

Indeed. My uncle worked out in Rio years ago and had an armed driver laid on by the company he was working for. The fact that you can't even go out for a walk or a spot of lunch without protection wore very thin very quickly regardless of the fantastic money he was on at the time.

st, they didn't call it shog for no reason. It does still occur a lot.

Where my friends live they could walk down the road, but others you wouldn't risk it. It is like any 3rd World big city, a st hole with some nice bits. Lots of crime and lots of corruption.

Where would you be staying?

Basically yes. The money was double what he was on in this country with the same company in the same role. It didn't take long before the money didn't matter in the face of the safety and liberty of him and his family though, even if it was 6 figures with infinate perks and allowances.

OK, so how exactly is there s**t in the smog?

I understood where 'shog' came from, but i'd like to know the science behind it...
