Sainsbury's scanning targets...
Discussion
Was doing my weekly shop tonight and got chatting to the checkout lady. Anyway she was quickly scanning through my stuff and I was getting a bit behind, so I said something good- humoured about her being super fast. She apologised and said that they now have item scanning targets to maintain and are monitored 'live', getting hauled in for a telling off if they don't meet them.
She was saying that the art of conversation is now dead as they concentrate on scanning to the required level, and even if they have an elderly customer who is struggling to keep up they have to keep scanning the items at top speed and then wait for them to catch up when they have finished.
Anyway, you could sense that she was fed up and embarrassed by it all, and wasn't afraid to tell me about it - albeit quietly.
WTF has it come to when you have to ignore the customer to avoid a b
king from your supervisor? I just found it all a bit strange to be honest.
Anyway, a nice lady commented on how nice the Chim was when I was putting my shopping in the boot so it wasn't all bad.

We will all be scanning our own shopping within 5 years...
Dont! I've noticed that a few local smaller supermarkets around here have removed the self scanning kit. Nothing made my blood boil more than those horrid things. The more we all use them the sooner they will be accepted, so make it your duty to use the cashiers!Edited by E31Shrew on Monday 15th March 23:34

Makes no sense, no matter how quickly they scan the items it still takes the same time to bag them.
I make sure all the items are bagged before handing over the payment so they end up waiting anyway.
Exactly, and this was her point too. She actually has to sit there waiting at the end but at least she meets her target I make sure all the items are bagged before handing over the payment so they end up waiting anyway.

As for the self checkouts, a local store where I live has 5 self- servers and two staffed checkouts. The staff try and convince the waiting public to use the self- service checkouts, and when they do they break, or need a staff member to do an age confirmation for alcohol. All that has happened is a long queue for the 'manned' checkouts and everyone ignoring the self- service area.
They are OK for two or three items, but not for any major shopping spree IMO.

Eh? - what's wrong with them?
Our nearest supermarket is Sainsburys - never had a problem but we've used it for years so most of the staff know us.
They also know if I'm on my own I can't cope!
I will look out/ask about he target you refer to Garlick.
Bit O/T, but I went to Tescos today and as I'd only got three items I used the self scan/check out thingy.
What a laugh - the computer voice got very annoyed with me because I was a bit slow in putting things in the bag.
I was slow because your bags are near impossible to open!
override code at Sainsburys self scan is 2007 - might not work at all stores but you only need to ask once;)

Wonder how many blokes take up the offer of 'bag packing' assistance?
I used to as i was useless
I now arrange my shopping in such a way on the conveyor so it goes straight into the bag in some sort of fairly neat order, like leaving the soft and delicate bits to last so i can place them on the top of the rest of the shopping so they dont squash

Maybe this is why they ask "Do you need help packing?" when I am clearly able-bodied and have 5 items in my basket.
I'd be interested to know if the same question is asked to anyone with a full trolley.
This is asked because when the Grocer magazine do their Grocer 33 check it includes the attitude of all staff, including till staff and the offer to pack bags. That's right, mystery shopers affect your experience at the till.I'd be interested to know if the same question is asked to anyone with a full trolley.
I quite like shopping at Sainsbury's - their EPOS system is so crap that I get at least two or three free shopping trips a year. Never happened anywhere else, but a quick scan of my c/c bills confirm it!
I cant stand cashiers who take bloody ages to fling it through, I just want it flung through asap, Id prefer to have a packing bench too so I can toss my stuff into a trolley and then pack at my leisure.
Targets in my shop (not sainsburys!) are 30 items per minute, if for any reason they need to do some actual customer servicing they can subtotal the bill to pause the timer or but their till on break to stop it. Id imagine they have these targets in sainburys as in most supermarkets the cashiers are lazy f
kers who will happilydo as little as humanly possible during their shifts. Its a character trait often found in checkout cashiers, lazy at everything in their lives, which is usually why theyve ended up sitting behind a till all day anyway.

W had our stats posted up on a wall. We didn;t have targets as such but they did have a level they wanted us to reach. But it wasn;t too high.
The nubmers we got were reliant on how busy the shop was, what till you were on and some other factors, so it was hard to compare people really.
