Anyone lived/living in Salford Quays?

Considering moving here in a few months as OH is working nearby, been to the area a few times and stayed in a hotel overnight near the Lowry and seems nice and quiet (outside peak times)and secure (important as can often be away during week), plus miss living by the water.

Wanted to know if anyone had experience of those newish 'luxury waterfront' style billed apartment blocks- are they decent with decent residents? and whats parking like for visitors as assuming you only get one or two/spaces?

I think the usual advice is 'don't'. The new apartment blocks may be nice, but 'bandit country' is just a few streets away.

i work in salford quays, which apartment blocks is it?

There is some right next to our work and they are basically like a garage with a pull down bed. They do have a balcony but even so Very compact to say the least.

I think the area has changed a lot the last couple of years, but there is still a few numpty's about etc.

I worked for a company with offices there a few years ago. We had 5 people mugged for laptops in 2 months & countless cars broken into. I haven't been back since.

the quays can be alright, if your actually over looking the lowry and water etc.

but yes your right, the other options are ordsall or the theatre of nightmares......not for me!

A mate of mine used to teach canoeing down on the quays.

The local kids used to come down and lob bricks at him from the bridges.

Don't let that put you off though.

Personally I'd consider living there myself if I wanted a flat with plenty of stuff to do round about. Good tram links to most parts of Manchester as well.

Do you know anything about the area other than hearsay?

As a 30yr old, I live on Ordsall Lane and have done for the last 4 years and have not had any bother. Granted, if you leave stuff on show in your car you'll have your window smashed and it taken, but that'll happen pretty much anywhere in a major city.

I walk to and from town most weekend evenings returning at all hours of the night. Never had any problems. I cycle around quite a bit too and have never had any bother on the bike either.

Most of the new apartments have one car park space in a compound and so I've never had any trouble with my 330CI Sport.

Granted, there are a lot nicer places to live and if you're living with your missus then Ordsall probably isn't the best recommendation.

There's plenty of flats in Manchester so rent is cheap and choice is huge.

I wouldn't live out at the Quays though (there's not much to do in the evenings locally). I'd live in town and commute out.

The Nike Outlet shop used to be good, but that shut years ago.

That's the most positive thing I can think of about the craphole.

I think a lot of regen has gone in the area and the BBC is moving there shortly so i think things are looking up for the area.

Just hate the fact i can see old shatford from my office window!

Salford Quays is nice. Salford is not nice. I think that's the general rule.

- I'll readily admit there are better recommendation if you're moving somewhere with your girlfriend. I was just giving an account of living there for the past 4yrs given all the doom and gloom. Maybe I've been lucky, maybe I'm due my bit of hassle, maybe it isn't as bad as people on the internet state

And given Ordsall isn't really the area in question...it's all a bit irrelevant

Used to but now its shed status and washed once in a blue moon, park it anywhere (literally), always with the glove box open and is always fine (touch wood)

Any of the 2 or 3 nice looking building near the Lowry.

Think all of Manc is the same, OH has so far had her passenger broken twice in different parts of town, nothing to take in the car FFS

Salford and salford quays are seperate so to speak, the quays is the area around the canal part and quite picturesque

thats also what appeals, transport is good.

Ive lived in Slough, Stoke & so on, once you know what to look out for and not go walkabout after 11 you are fine. Myself and otherhalf walked around the entire waterfront from Lowry around to Old Trafford (deceptively long walk), met a few chav, but were more your cheeky scally types.

Not an issue as such, dont drink so driving is fine so city centre is 15-10 mins away. Jogging is a passion for both so perfect place in the morning.

I think more than anything its the water, used to live on the sussex coast and had the water view from window, then was in Zurich and again lots of water so miss it. Would love a decent size balcony high up overlooking lowry area & waterfront jogging so more a romantic notion- have somehow managed to add it to my something I must do list so very keen. Will probably go take a look at a few places, if not then somewhere like Didsbury will have to do(never been but told its a nice town) or a converted warehouse type with beams & bricks in city centre as new builds suck.

My brother lives there and has done for nearly two years now and has had no problems.
From his balcony you can see Shameless country and apparently you can hear a lot of goings on over there at night but it has not strayed his way so far.
Nice apartment complex as well with secure parking etc luckily he does not own a car so I can park up no problem but otherwise it would be a bit crap for visitors (or for people sharing) as there is only one space per apartment.

The Quays is ok. It's near Ordsall but don't let that put you off. Most places these days are near somewhere slightly shifty. It's one of those places that has more of a reputation & a past to be honest. Plenty of chavs around but couldn't you say the same for anywhere? The comments about leaving stuff in the car could apply to anywhere in the UK - common sense really.

Get somewhere with secure parking & you'll be fine - to be honest, would you consider anywhere without proper parking anyway?

Nothing to do in the evening but you do have the Metrolink which takes about 20 mins tops to get into Manchester.

If you ask me, Didsbury on a thursday/friday/saturday night is far worse.
