Do you feel you have missed out on life.

Been thinking about this for a while now mainly as I am fast approcahing the big 40. If I look back on my life I have really achieved very fking little. Although I have worked hard to get to where I am I feel that I have missed out on so much. For example while I have been working huge swathes of rain forest have been chopped down. Now I never got to see these huge swathes but now its way to late to see them. A lost opportunity? Ok so this is just an example but there is plenty more simmilar to this. Have I really just been a passenger and life has simply past me by without me really noticing it? I know feel the need to stop working altogether and get one with actaully living life instead of just existing.

Console yourself in the knowledge that 90% of the worlds population have had things a fair bit harder than you. Then, spurred on by this epiphany, buy a car you can't afford - mid-life crisis is the best excuse for catching up.

I can honestly say that my age starting with a 4 rather than a 3 has not even registered as a concern.

I feel I have missed out on some stuff in life, like Uni and having full control over my life, but then I've done a lot of stuff that civvies will never experience and had a lot of experiences.

Yep totally....turned 36 on Monday, and just thought 'what the fk have you done with your life missy'

But then again, I have a son, my own home, a job or three, my health, good friends and family. A hell of a lot more than many people

Would not worry about the rain forrest bit, you have not missed much. If you fly over, it just looks like a huge big field of broccoli as far as the eye can see, going in it is not to be advised. We had a sign in the bar that read as follows

If God had meant us to go into the rain forrest he would not have put so many things in there that don't fking like us.

If you knew what was good for you you stuck by this advice.

THere are fking millions and millions and millions of square miles of primary rainforest left.

If you left your house with a credit card right now you could be in the middle of the Amazon jungle by the morning.
Make a point of doing something that you really want to do at least once a year and the memories will soon stack up.

Or leave your wife for a teenager and buy a Porsche as also is the norm in your situation

all us pre40's are in the same boat I reckon. We were too young to get in on the 80's money, the 90's we spent somewhere in a field in Hampshire, the noughties were spent stressing over how the hell we are going to afford a house, and the next decade, our 40's we will say, you know what, who fking cares. Do we really have to "do something" with our lives? What if we don't want to be a shining light, I would much rather be happy and content with being at peace with myself, rather than trying to please all and sundry. Saying that I hope to be debt free in my early 40's so i can ps off again round the world with SWMBO in tow this time.

Such a middle class concern (and I include myself in this) if you think about it, its a pretty good position to be in - to be able to sit back and think "what have i contributed?" when you think of the myriad other things in life and just pure chance can throw at you.

Could have been born in a 3rd world where survival is your prime conern.

Could have been born in a country at war (with itself or others).

Could have been born disabled in some way.

Could have developed a horrid disease at some point in your life.

All that is true of me but it still boils down to whether you compare yourself to your contemporaries or you are able to look at yourself and decide what makes you truly happy.

PS. I'm 40 in a couple of years.

Not saying I want to go to a rain forrest i just used that as an example of things, that due to working, I have actaully missed out on.

I turned 40 towards the end of last year, and life really does begin at 40.

Have I missed opportunities? Fecking loads of them. But I've also experienced a few things too and I'd be a different person today if I hadn't. Not saying a better or worse person, but different.
I probably wouldn't have the Sagaris if it hadn't been for my ex-wife egging me on to overcome my natural caution. Mind you, I'd have a shedload more money in the bank too as it wasn't the only time she overcame my natural caution.

Anyway, celebrate the things you have done rather than navel-gaze at what you haven't, I reckon.
