Anyone just upped sticks and left?

I just wondered if anyone has some useful advice/warning stories.
Basically i live in Aylesbury and work in Heathrow, my other half used to live in Portsmouth and has family on the Isle of Wight. She always says how much she'd like to live in southsea, near the promenade.
The idea of this is really starting to appeal to me. Has anyone done this, moving a 100 miles from where ive settled seems difficult with finding a job ect. Just intrested in people thoughts

I moved from Yorkshire to London many years ago (back in gods country now though) and I found it very difficult even though I had a job sorted. Hardest part was social life or lack thereof. Took about a year or 2 to build up a base of some good aquiantances and several years after that to build up a few good friends. I expect id have to commute for a while to make it easier.
Heathrow is just within commuting distance if you want to keep your job short term.
Have you spent any time in Southsea or the area, might be worth a short stay before you commit yourself. I gave up a good job in my early 40's without another job to go to. I just had to get away from the industry I was in.Best decision I ever made. Now been self employed for 12 years and couldn't go back. Something always turns up if you want it to. I would say go for it, you can always go back if it doesn't suit you both.

I would go for it. The South Coast is a lovely place to be. As said before, trips to the IOW are not cheap, but you can buy bundles of tickets that reduce the cost quite substanitally. Be aware, though, that the trip up the A3 or M3 to Heathrow will be a nightmare during peak times, more often than not. It can be done (my wife used to commute from Christchurch to Chiswick every day), but can get pretty tiring, not to mention the fuel cost.

I don't know Southsea, but I took the first opportunity I got to get the hell out of Aylesbury.I had a decent job with Bucks C.C. and a part-time job in a pub (The Yeoman). When the trainee manager(ess) fell for my charms (she was only human. Welsh, but still human) and said "They've given me my own pub in South Wales - want to come with me?" I booked the first Transit van out of there.
Thanks for some useful advice there fellas, some not so useful mind, some people cant resist the temptation of trying to be funny or being unecessarily sarcastic.
100 miles to some of you obviously may seem like nothing but to me it isnt, the missus knows the place, has family there ect, but i know nothing about the place and my family would be miles away as is the place i worked hard at to get a decent job at.
Im glad some people decided they need a change and just to do something else, i feel that way now, and i dont fancy going australia to never see my family again, by the sea is nice enough.
And on the Aylesbury Southsea comparison Aylesbury aint too bad ( to you rich folk im sure it is ) but to your average folk its not a complete s@*t hole, and southsea looks ok and its by the sea, sure im gonna get the chip on shoulder comments here but im not putting up with some arogant tosser knocking a pretty average life.

That's why lots of people live here on the IOW to take advantage of the quality of life, low crime and cheaper house prices and commute to the mainland to work. A ferry season ticket works out to £5.75 a day and it takes less than 20 minutes. 
The Hindhead tunnel will be opening soonish (next year?) so your commute up the A3 won't be horrendous, might be worth checking wht the train service to Heathrow is like,too.
Southsea has some lovely places to live, but as above, it is part of a major city which just happens to be a small island itself. This means that the nice places and the not so nice places are pretty much side by side. However, take all the PH 'hilarious' comments with a pinch of salt, you're unlikely to come across any inner-city type problems unless you go looking for it.
