I've always been under the impression that the correct way to pronounce H is like aitch yet most other people pronounce it haitch... which is right??

I eat peas with honey,
I have done all my life,
It makes them taste quite funny,
But it sticks them to my knife.

Aitch is correct!

I did consider an "and/or". As I appreciate you're indeed correct.

"Aitch" yes

Nowadays I just assume anyone who says "haitch" is mentally deficient. I even used to have people arguing with me about it at school/college, quoting "HAIRy HAt Man" as justification. rolleyes

It is usually the same sort of person who wants to sound "proper" and is painfully aware of where they were dragged up. Like those secretaries who answer the phone with "hellay?". I'm afraid that hybrid aussie-speak (and an inability to pronounce the letter 'o' in words) is now making it as far as TV and radio presenters frown
