I was speaking to one of the women at work today - a normally intelligent person - who is going to a church tomorrow to speak to the vicar about her+fiance getting married there. When I asked her "are you Christian?" she said yes and said she'd been christened and confirmed, but when I asked her how often she went to church she responded "Oh, no" (as in "Oh [God] no")...as if it was something unpleasant. She also treated the requirement to attend this church for 6 months prior to marriage - "I hope it's not every week".

So WTF?!? Now I'm the first to acknowledge that religion is a private thing, but if you don't go to church normally why the **** do you want to get married in one? What's the point?!?

Religionists...strange people!

We did the same and have some lovely photos outside the church to remember the day.

Never been back there since, or any other church for that matter save attending other weddings.

Bit different now though, as back then it was only a choice of picturesque?!? church or dingy registry office - we knew which one to choose.

Nowadays there is a lot more choice so unlikely we would have made the same decision.

Oh, and I remember being charged quite a lot by the church to marry us there, which I suspect if we were regular church goers would not have been the case. I lost no sleep over the whole thing and I am sure the vicar did not either.

Ex and I were married in her church, by her priest and my mum's minister.

The priest decided that the celibacy thing wasn't for him and left the priesthood and now has a family.
The minister definitely didn't do celibacy and was asked to leave the ministry.
The church we got married in developed a structural fault and had to be demolished.
The tree where many of our wedding photos were taken at was struck by lightning shortly afterwards, falling across a main road and leading to huge tailbacks.

I look upon it as atheist old me being to weddings what Emmsman is to outdoor cookery!

In simple form -

If I want a burger, I go to McDonalds.

If I want some beer, I go to the Off Licence.

I wanted to get married, I went to a Church.

That's how it is. I could do all these things in a pub nowadays but sometimes, certain places are the real deal.

Why get married somewhere else ? Churches are the place to be seen for these type of do's.

You wouldn't play cricket in a town hall would you? No.

Everything has it's place and there's a place for everything - even if you don't believe in religeon religion.

When my missus wanted to get married in a church, I voiced my concerns to the vicar...

Seems that, as I'd been honest, it would be in order for me to marry in his church, without having to attend for several weeks beforehand...

Which was nice...smile

This reminds me...

Once arrived at a wedding late.

Service had started and we sat through half of it before we realised it was the wrong church, wrong wedding...

Oh, how we laughed...

I am in no way religious but if I ever do get married I'd like it to be in a church, more for the tradition than anything.

Doesn't stop you getting shot in the head, blown up, maimed, etc, does it, so essentially futile. By that reckoning every single war casualty is a theist... Not a great result for 'God' is it?
