CB Radio Jargon - help required

Dear All

I have a bet with other half regarding some CB radio jargon, and I wondered if anyone can PLEASE help (as I really want to win the bet )

OK... here's the question:

One of us thinks when you were looking to chat to someone you would say....

A/ 10 4 for a copy

or option

B/ 1 4 for a copy

All historic but:
If you are on channel 14 (Normal calling) then its 14 for a copy. Truckers use 19. Emergency was 9.

10-4 was message OK.

Ten codes

And yes, I still have my Sidebander with 'burners'. 27.555 USB anyone ?

14, as in the channel number. Though I seem to recall my CB pencil case at school had 10-4 on it incorrectly.

14 was for Base Stations and 19 was for mobile Breakers

In the early days it was frowned upon to use 19 unless you were on the move.

That's exactly how I remember it too, certainly in my area. Sometimes you could travel to another part of the country and 14 wouldn't be used at all, not even by the home-based.

When I set mine up in 2002 for the first time in about 7 years, those that were still using it were all on CH19. Perhaps it's about time I got my rig down from the loft, whacked the aerial up on the roof and had a play?

Correct. (as I mentioned earlier). Channel 9 was for emergency only and was heavily monitored.

'round these parts Channel 30 was mainly used for the farmers.


Great news now, all CB radios now no longer require a licence. (Was £15 a year?). Its also great that the amateur radio Licence is now a one off payment for life.

CB radio was starting to get a competition and people were using 1 or 2 kilowatt 'burners' to talk to each other less that a mile apart which caused a lot of 'bleedover'

I did hear that it was slowly coming back into fashion as some of the teenagers have found its cheaper than Mobiles. Does not seem that long (to me) that about 4 cars in 10 had a CB twig.

Oddly, I still get called by my CB handle after all these years.

BTW: I would like to add. Cheers to the bds who stole the CB, burners and aerial from my Sierra when parked in Aylsham Road Norwich about 15 years ago.

No, It was Scorps.

Talking about CB, I laugh when I hear about Facebook and all these social sites causing problems. When I was a teenager it was the curse of the CB radio that was breaking up families as everyone was running off with others after an 'eyeball'.

There are many stories that I wish I could tell about ladies flashing boobs at the window, being chased by a rather upset father, A chap throwing a brand new side-bander into the river after someone joked about the DTI visiting.
One *cough* lady that used to sell herself over the airwaves and stacks of other stories.

The K40 was a lovely piece of kit, and is still available today. It was particularly classy next to all the Modulators, Moonrakers, DV27s and the like.

My weapon of choice was a Kestrel Twin-Shuttle on a mag-mount, but I always hankered after a boot-mounted K40. IIRC, they were around £40, which seemed a hell of a lot of money when you could pick up one of the above twigs for a tenner...
