Following the weekend visit which involved some otter watching, which was very enjoyable watching them play, how similar would ferrets be as I don't have an expanse of water to keep otters in?

Very similar to a Rabbit, Hutch, change the Saw Dust every few weeks. Feed them anything. water, and repeat.

Ferrets are pretty smelly and can be fast as hell when they want to be (my sister kept a couple at one point). Not sure they will be remotely like otters though.

Get a couple of rats.

They are really friendly, easier to keep and love human company. Especially when nice food is on offer

My old next door neighbor kept ferrets, apparently there are ferret clubs and everything, he was a member.
