what is it with Cats + Bleach ?

lol... just put some bleach on a corner of a rug and my Burmese went over to it, smelt it and then went mental & started licking it furiously

You can see his eyes all wide and mad.

One of mine is mad for bleach! She was a rescue kitten, maybe that makes a difference?

I use bleach a lot when cleaning, one of my cats lick my hands obsessively after (I'm not good at wearing gloves).

I think it must be to do with the ammonia in bleach.

There is no ammonia in bleach. The active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite. If you mix ammonia with that it gives some interesting results, one of which was responsible for Michael Faraday getting his big break.

Hmmm yes I got that wrong, rushed my reply, There must be some link but that obviously isn't it!!

It's been long advised though not to use bleach to clean up cat pee due to the scent of ammonia from the urine not because of the danger of mixing the chemicals (though I know there can be) but because it will encourage cats to go back to the area to pee.

Maybe it's because the ammonia is only masked by the bleach not broken down as it should be.

It's ineffective at removing the odoriferous compounds in cat pee, so their scent mark remains, but it contains no related compounds itself.
