I come in need of more info than I find on the interweb.

My sister is about to get into something that she has described as an Islamic marriage. A quick Google reveals a full, legally binding deal. She is under the impression that the ceremony is a simple blessing to celebrate their relationship and make things more acceptable to his Muslin family and no more than this. She does have a habit of dating/marrying etc men from Albania/Turkey and that region of the world without seeming to know much about thier cultural background.

She is 21, has a four year old daughter and is already divorced. Yes I know how that reads, and that is part of why I wish to prevent her doing anything else stupid. If for no other reason than I don't want to see my niece follow in her mother's footsteps.

So is there an Islamic blessing type ceremony, or is she going in at the deep end? Again?

My sister is a bit dim, and quite likes turkish waiters and kebab shop workers.

She doesn't fit the typical PH view of how a 21 year old girl should behave.

Is she about to royally fk up?
This can only go one way.

I went to a muslim wedding once. Considering that marriage is a union of two people it did seem strange for the bride and groom to be in different rooms. bow
Silly muslims!

I know, but I live in hope that there may be at least 1 vaguely sensible answer.

How can there be a sensible answer to such a stupid action?

Divorce your sister, lock her in the cellar, MX5! These are the most sensible answers I can manage and only one of them is worth following up.

Generally there is only one thing, a "nikkah" both parties sign a contract basically.

That's all that's required, takes less than 15 minutes.

The last Muslim wedding that I went to was so long, that I had to go to the pub a couple of times in the middle of it. smile

It was the groom's idea wink

It's just a marriage contract. Not legally binding in the UK though.

Edit - Just make sure that he's marrying her for the rights reasons not simply to have a white trophy wife!

Not legally binding here - but cuturally, it means a lot to them. I've peered over the edge into a similar situ' with regard my own ex-girlfriend (me being the English chap / her being from that background - and also that of a close friend (a girl who was brainwashed into marrying her boyfriend in a similar way and the fallout from that). It's not necessarily a bad thing but my spidey sense would be tingling.

an islamic marriage is an one that sees 2 people married religiously, it's a lot more serious than a blessing and does involve signing an islamic marriage contract...

AFAIK it's not legally binding in any way but it deffo settles the relatives, my sis had her islamic nica straight after her town hall legal marriage but before the week of wedding events - it's a nice event!

Yes there is an islamic blessing at least in Indonesia, I married my wife in the UK, but we had a blessing back in Indonesia, in the house, my Indonesian was Ok to know what was going on, my advice would be don't do it unless you are fuully aware of what is going on all the time, it is very easy to convert to Islam and very hard to get out, if she must do it then I would advise here to go and say absolutly nothing just listen. You need to think very hard for example if it was a marriage can the women commence the divorce and if the child does not convert then it can not inherit if she died.

Idiot. That kind of attitude is why the Daily Mail sells papers.

OP - there are variations on marriage in all religions and cultures - ranging from pre-nups, through "treat each other as equals" to "I will own everything you do if you even think of divorcing me".

Ask the Imam what kind of service is being performed. That should then give you enough info to Google.

My sister 'married' her then boyfriend whilst living in Saudi. It wasnt a Christian ceremony, so as both of them were Christians (they didnt want to get flogged/thrown in jail/beheaded etc for being together alone etc) neither of them considered it legally binding. they had a 'proper' marriage about 4 years later.

I think you'll find that without a 'civil' ceremony there is no marriage in the eyes of the law. As far as i'm aware, Islamic marriages don't come under the civil ceremoney category and hence they are not married in the eyes of the law.
