Being in IT I use phrases that non IT colleagues find both perplexing an amusing, you sometimes don't realise just what a strange person you must sound like, I wonder what pictures they get in their heads when I'm boring them in meetings:

Fat client/thin client (customers come in all shapes and sizes)
LES circuits (dedicated running tracks for same sex couples)
Data packets (when you need data, just get some down Tescos)
Up time (when IT people are really happy)
Remote shut down (when they're depressed, they just go somewhere and collapse)
Software testbed (bring your laptop, chill out in bed and play games)

The irony is that I'm sat typing a tedious IT document and the pub is 30 seconds walk away, but I need to get this in, this evening. Damn PH for tempting me away every few minutes, must work..

I used to work with a company who had onsite IT support i.e. they came out to your desk when the IT Helpdesk guys couldn't fix a problem remotely.

This one guy often told people they had an "ID ten tee" error on their PC. Even funnier when people would say "that sounds serious", "can you fix it?", etc.

If you don't understand, it's ID then number 10 then T.

I thought that was PEBCAK? As in 'problem exists between computer and keyboard'?

Thankfully I've never worked in IT support or helpdesk etc. I'd go utterly mad. Working with very intelligent technically educated finance types, even *they* come up with some howlers sometimes with basic technology... you'd have thought that a maths Ph.D would think along the same logical lines as IT types, weird when they *completely* miss the point wink

Refer to their customers as “users”. The only other group that uses the same expression is the illegal drugs industry

Problem exists between chair and keyboard e.g. the human

I dont work in I.T but do have to fix computers and printers (of the photo printing variety) on a regular basis and often use the term FUBAR. Its suprising how often I get asked what it means.

I think the C in PEBCAK probably stands for chair, as computer doesn't make sense. smile

My employer's IT front line remedy for most things was 'switch it off then switch it on again'. Solved most problems but if you were bright enough to have already tried it they knew they had to get off their a.. come up and look at it themselves.
