Having a chat at a colleagues desk just now, we were discussing revising War Walks (a tv prog presented by Prof Richard Holmes) and how we could revitalise it for a younger audience. Another colleague said we were being stupid (fair point) at which point I mentioned getting in some celeb presenters, the first name popping into my head being Ricky Martin.

No problems you'd think, except this person is openly 'out'. The first thing she said was "what do you mean?" She dropped it and I eventually went back to work.

Now, I think she might have taken offence (even though it was completely unintended). My options:

1. Have a chat face to face and explain his name was the first that popped into my head and there was nothing personal meant.
2. Do the above but on e mail.
3. Ignore it and pretend it never happened.

Thoughts? Am I overreacting?

ps. No I will not post photos of aforementioned colleague.

Explain that you were using him as an example of a vacuous empty brained celebrity with no worth to give to a programme, rather than referring to his penchant for chutney ferreting. Should have been a diplomat, me biggrin

Go back to her and offer to get Sandi Toksvig, Moira Stewart or Pam St Clement instead.

Job done.

Do you seriously worry about things like that? wink

I would have forgotten about it ten seconds later.

why would suggesting a gay TV celeb be offensive to her? If so, and everything else being equal, it's her being over-sensitive and paranoid.

I'm no biology specialist, but I think the term "coming out (of the closet)" relates to a condition that is mainly seen in Homo Sapiens. wink

Two options, 1/ tell her the fact he's a poof/faggot/shirt lifter (delete what's not needed) is here nor there but what's her problem anyway.
2/ Ignore it.

So let me get this right. In the Film 2010 thread you are ranting to all and sundry that there is no way that Winkelman should have been given the job as she is - and I quote

st_files said:
she is an classic rent-a-presenter popping up on whatever show/chatshow/quiz show will pay her a fee. I've nothing against her personally other than she represents the archetypal vapid, insincere, talentless mong that populate tv screens for no other reason that they dont fall to pieces in front a tv camera - you could put dozens of names on that list.
This is despite her having a history of Arts degree from Cambridge

Then in this thread - in the Original post you suggest that the person who should revitalise war walks for the young is Ricky Martin.

Have a fking word with yourself

Indeed - it's a fairly wide field, to be fair.
