Hi,

I'm moving to Bristol to start a new position in the next 5 weeks. I'm going to be working in Thornbury, which I suppose is technically south Gloucester.

I want a safe and decent area to house share with other 'young professionals' that's not more than 30 minutes drive from Thornbury.

Any ideas?

Thank you

There'll be plenty of choice in Sadley, and its relatively easy to get into town on the bus.

Bradley Stoke. It's our pet name for the place.

Dear theundecided,

I'm not that familiar with Thornbury (I'm in Warmley) but can suggest you try posting on the southwest forum,

regards,
Jet

Dear Jet Noise, I'll do that.

I take it Bradley is a bit dodgy then?

There are loads of places round there that are lovely. We used to live in Latteridge next to the duck-pond and only found it driving around - we were actually lost at the time. That's the best plan to be honest - go for a drive a few evenings to see for yourself to get a feel of what areas you like.
Needless to say there is less traffic north of Thornbury than south (though I like the bowl pub in Almondsbury smile ), which tends to be hellish during rush-hour.

Nah it's alright. Typical massive glorified modern housing estate really. A few pubs, the 3 Brooks being the only one worth bothering with. Curry house. Nice chinese. Massive Tesco. Small Tesco. Starbucks. KFC. Subway. Greggs. You get the idea.

There'll be a lot of houseshares available due to Aztec West.

You could try Winterbourne as well.

It's a colossal housing estate packed with Audi A3s and Crest homes. Not so bad if you like that kind of thing. Anyway, I will throw in the alternative suggestion of heading East a little which puts you into the South Gloucestershire / Wiltshire countryside. You won't get the 20-something-professional-houseshare but you can still be 30 minutes from Bristol without actually being in Bristol.

I suppose I could deal with the characterless could-be-anywhere suburb, so long as I'm not worried about crime or my car being tampered with.

Thanks for the advice people.

yes I live on the Cotswold Escarpement near Wotton Under Edge and love it.

Or look a little to the North, up the A38/M5 corridor in the Severn Vale - there are some nice properties around places like Slimbridge and Frampton-on-Severn, depending on your budget, and you're well placed for access to Thornbury via the A38 and civilisation (well, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Bristol) via the M5.

hornetrider has it on the ball there.

Ive lived in bradley stoke before and i will soon be moving back. Its generally a very nice place to live and tbh its mostly chav free. I never had any trouble with crime when i was there.

Plenty of places to jog, and theres a large cyclepath also. Not that im into any of that...

Its a perfect location as it is just off the m5/m4 crossover so commuting is made much easyier.

Yeah, thats fine and everything but Bradley Stoke is a dormitory zone with as much character as a lobotomized Barrat home.

OP: Do you want someone to sleep, eat and sh*t, or do you want someone that has a bit of life?

Another vote for the Frampton / Sliombridge area. Nice places to be, good community, good communications with M5. Easy to get to Thornbury as well, just down the A38.

Can even recommend a good taxi company close by.whistle

Somewhere with a bit of life would be nice, I understand Bristol has its 'bohemian' parts.

I know it sounds a bit old man, but main priorities are chav-free and safe areas, nice house with a max rent of £400 pm really per room and not too far from the centre.

Off street parking/drive would be good, which makes the dull Barratt-type estates probable.

Sounds like my northern charms will work a treat here.

The 'bohemian' areas of Bristol would a) take much longer to get to Thornbury and b) be more of a car theft risk.

You could always look at one of the satellite villages as have been mentioned in this thread, depends what you're after. Winterbourne has a small High St, few pubs and a couple of curry houses. I'm not overly familiar with the rest.

I reckon that for an 'estate' the Brooks is a decent boozer, especially on sunny summer evenings.

Of course, I left the sthole that is Bradley Stoke a couple of years ago for a decent life the other side of the Severn Bridge wink If your job affords you to pay the fiver bridge tax every day (or you have a bike in which case its free) then Chepstow is a lovely town, and a cracking B-road blast to Thornbury from the old bridge driving

Fair enough, off street parking would be tricky further in.
