Wifey is now 2 weeks short of her due date and we are busy packing emergency go-bags full of stuff. Any good tips for things that will make the whole experience slightly less uncomfortable for both of us?

I took:

FOOD - lots of it, for you and her
Pound coins for the drinks machine
Travel bag for you to have a wash and brush up - toothpaste
Camera
Phone

Clothes for the wife

Clothes for the baby
Bedding for the baby

Book to make lists in

Given that you are likely in for a long wait I would suggest the following.

A couple of sandwiches and a bag of crisps
Two, perhaps three, cans of beer
Ipod
Magazines
A good book
Phone charger as you will run it down surfing the internet.

Under no circumstances should you take any porn. The last thing you want is anything which might tempt you to take a peak down the business end.

Good luck chap. Hope it goes well for you.

Decent headphones with a long wire because the ones on patient entertainment systems are crap.

Earplugs are good too.

Hand and face wipes.

A supply of newspapers and bin liners in the car. Birthing makes an enormous amount of mess and you don't want the seats getting mucky.

Take a carry-cot and one of them mini jumpsuits that babies wear. No, take two - one in blue and one in pink.

Then, select a baby from the hospital that looks a bit like you and/or your missus.

Steal the baby and take it home as your own.

You've just saved her indoors the pain and, let's face it, humiliation of birth-giving.

She'll thank you for it. Eventually.

a good book and several car mags. Something that can browse the internet. If you are lucky it will only be a few hours. If like me you are unlucky you will read all the mags, wander the corridors and examine all the tat in the hospital shop. Then go out for a drive to sainsburys for more mags and food. Then do the same again later.....

Plenty of water, hospital rooms can be as hot as hell

A good book (even if you're not a book reader), as its amazing how quickly you'll read a car mag cover to cover

Wet wipes, wash bag for yourself, mobile + chaeger, LOTS of change as parking & snack machines will swalllow it

Hospital stay is an exercise in sleep deprivation, so earplugs and black eyemask thing. That's for her!
For you, as above - entertainment material. A book of names can provide entertainment, Algernon, non, Alfred, non....
A bag with a change of clothes/toilet stuff for yourself may be a good idea, you may be there for 48 hours.
Good luck!

Not this ^^^^^^

She won't appreciate it, neither will the staff.

Save it for the champagne when you get home.

Best of luck with it. Our first is 5 weeks old soon so we've recently been through all this. We were in the hospital for about 24 hours before the birth. We had a huge list of stuff and all we used was:

Bottles of pop/water
Snickers bars
Energy sweets
Baby grow
Baby hat
Nappies
Evo magazine

Literally nothing else

She gets fed whilst she's there you dont so take some cash for some food or pack some butties. TBH going out for food can be a nice break for you so I'd take the cash.

We'll be having the baby at TPMH at RAF Akrotiri, so will definitly be bringing plenty of water! My sister has also recommended drinks with straws as sometimes it can be difficult to switch positions to drink.

Do any beers come with straws? ;0)

Keep your wife's maternity book (red book) handy as well, if baby does decide to come early and you call an ambulance you can just quickly pick up one of your prepacked bags together with the red book as we will need that before we go wink

Fit a decent car seat cover on her seat now. And a rubber mat with turn up edges that would hold any spills.

You absolutely don’t want to be arriving at hospital with the waters having broken on the way.

It’s soaking into the seat and carpet. You have to rush into the hospital with her and leave it.

Hours later you come out and all you want to do is go home and get some rest too. But that mess has soaked into the seat and you need to clean it.
