I have only just noticed that the local shops are making a killing on books of stamps.

ie a 1st class at 41p is costing 49p even if you buy a book of them.

OK it's more convenient than walking and queuing down the post office but I always though that stamps had to be sold at their value. Well currently in use ones anyway?

And they don't mark up the rest of the stock by more than 10%?

I know but just thought that stamps being legal tender, that they could not sell them for more than their face value.

It would be like selling one pound coins for £1.20. Is this not loan shark territory?

Why would they, they're not a charity.

There's no loan involved... you mean profit shark...

Assuming you're PAYE (and not a civil servant), where does your employer gets the money from each month to pay you? Yep, from profits.

They're saving you the effort of walking to & queuing at the post office & openly charging for the privelege. If you feel it's worth their fee buy your stamps from them, if you don't go to the post office. Easy.

That's a weird one - coins, yes, notes, no. Bloody Jocks.

Buy them in big packs in Costco. They end up being marginally discounted from face value...

'Legal tender' is a widely misunderstood term though. Practically it has little bearing.

I bought a load back in the day, when they were still only 19p, thus saving me 22p each time I use one.

I didn't think you could do that as they have a different value on them?

If they say "1st" then you're ok.
