Please take a look at the following pics of young danes in the Faroes proving their manliness as they slaughter calderon dolphins....maybe danish bacon should be avoided if you care about animals, food, what you eat and the planet in general

Is it for food / ritual / tradition?

proably gets eaten but you can see the way they kill is by using a large metal hook and blunt force, does it really matter if there is tradition if such amazing animals are killed by just some knobs implanting a metal hook in the vague direction of a cetacean's brain?

So what does it have to do with bacon?

Much as I'm a committed carnivore, I happen to think that cetaceans are sentient, and are rare-enough already, thank-you very much.

This should be stopped.

Er, they're not Danes. They're Faroese, or whatever the term is. Get your facts right.

Edited to add that I completely agree that this is a despicable practice, but inhabitants of the Faroe Islands are NOT Danes.

It's for food but apparently demand is in decline as those eating it are being contaminated with mercury and cadmium.

I would like to think that some minor boycott of danish produce could be evoked, after threatening the danish embassy with the wrath of the combined purchasing power of PH.... just my way of trying to put some consumer pressure onto the Dk to try to stop such grotesque scenes. Aren't you offened by it?

Hmm, don't know a lot about it but based on the posts here, if it is food then crack on.

Not sure I would use that implement though.

Less than I am by your ignorance, for what it's worth.

Coming from Faroe ancestry - great grandfather was harpoonist on a whaler that came to the UK - I know a little about this.

The key point though is that the Faroe islanders are about as Danish as a Shetlander is English. They may technically be Danish, but in the same way a Shetlander is British.

It's like asking the Danes to boycott haggis for the English unleasing Tony Blair on the world.

Boycotting bacon will have no effect.

You are right to highlight the barbaric practice, but your suggested punishment for the "crime" is just silly. If you want people to act on this issue can I suggest putting pressure on your Euro MP or supporting one of the myriad pressure groups that campaign on this very topic.

The other side of this (and I'm definitely in the against camp, but to give people the full picture) is that it is argued that the level of suffering to the whale is at most equal to or less than that of commercial harpooning. A harpoon often results in a very painful and long death, with considerable suffering. The gaff hook to the brain, once the whale is in the shallows, makes for a considerably swifter death - the pictures however do make harrowing viewing.

I already have. Faroese are not Danes. Actual Danes would be - and are - just as offended by this practice as you are. By all means call for this parctice to be ended, but get your facts right before you go into battle:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands

So, just in case I'm not getting through, if you want to boycott the Faroe Islands and whatever products they may sell, go right ahead, but referring to the people in your original post as "young Danes" is incorrect.

I for one am going to buy more Danish stuff as a mark of respect to them for having the guts to defy international opinion and stick with their (entirely non damaging - dolphins ain't endangered species) traditions.

OK OK I promise not to eat Danish whale meat this week.

Well obviously I'll finish off the tin already opened and that will not be enough for a meal so will have to open another tin but after that definitely no Danish whale meat.

I suppose I'll have to open the Icelandic tomorrow, which is a shame as I was saving that for a special occasion but I'll have to make do with just Japanese whale and dolphin sashimi then.

Anyone for a panda barbeque on Friday?

Ok turns out calderon dolphin is a type of pilot whale, but that doesn't change my opinion at all. They're totally non endangered.

Hope that's dolphin friendly whale meat!
