BBQ's - please be careful
Discussion
Hey guys, anyone had a nice BBQ this weekend? It's been gorgeous weather but, as stupid as this sounds, they can be dangerous.
My friend, who races in the Ma5da Championship, went to Brands Hatch this weekend with a van and the car on a trailer. I couldn't make it as I had other plans. So in the evening on Sat, him and a few other guys had a BBQ and a couple of beers, all good fun. He was sleeping in the van overnight, so put out the BBQ and brought it in the van and went to sleep.
Unfortunately, he didn't wake up for the race on Sunday....
We can only assume that he didn't put the BBQ out properly as he is in a coma with Carbon Monoxide poisoning. We assume the coals were still smouldering and burnt the remaining oxygen in the van. We have no idea why he decided to bring the BBQ inside (He's a smart guy, not a idiot but must have had a reason for it?). He was found in the van, unconscious, when he didn't turn up for the race. He's now been taken to Great Yarmouth because they have a hyperbaric chamber and doctors are hoping this will help. We can only hope he regains consciousness as soon as possible. Once he's ok, we can start ripping the piss out of him! Assuming the damage isn't too bad...
So please guys, I know it's such a simple thing to assume but please be careful. It's now BBQ weather time, but don't have a BBQ in an enclosed space and ensure that you put it out properly and let it rest overnight before storing it.
The same goes to you Le Mans travellers, please dont make the same mistake.

Well, it goes to show there's more than one emsman!
He's a bloody genius, so for him to do something like that is beyond us. One of the intial thoughts is that he was worried about it getting stolen so maybe that's why he brought it in...
He's still out of it at the moment, but the docs are hoping he'll be back in a few more hours.

If it helps I can vouch for how effective compression treatment (ie hyperbaric chamber) really is for gas poisoning, when I worked at the navy diving school in Portsmouth we used to do a fair amount of treatments for this type of injury and for some self inflicted ones (as in the gas yourself with hose pipe from the exhaust of the car, suicide attempts) It was quite suprising what a difference it made and very often they would come round while in the pot, the actual medical side and implications of possible brain injuries etc I'm not up to speed with as I simply sat there for hours in the chamber with the victim and a nurse, but I do know that the end results were often good. Best of luck to him.
That's dreadful, hope he pulls through ok.
NEVER underestimate the power of fire, indeed anything alight, I've had a couple of close run ins due to stupidity or even the wind turning to the point that if I do smoke I don't do it in the house. A friend recently lost her whole home and all her family's posessions due to a stupid accident.
Oh and DO NOT use LYNX deoderant as a BBQ accelerant makes all the food taste like you are eating someones arm pit!!
Seriously, good luck to your pal.

Anybody remember the chap on PH who had a bottle of lighting fluid explode in his face? I hope he is okay now too....
How can we forget emsman. I hope so too. Edited by soad on Monday 12th April 14:00
Whomehearedly concur the OP's thoughts though- what seems like a danger free situation can soon turn ugly.
Good luck to the OP's mate- I lost a mate through carbon monoxide poisening due to a faulty heater. Not good.
