Ok I'm sending my Mam and Dad to the London Eye for the day in May for her Birthday as it's something she has wanted to do for ages.

However I am going to have them fly down as the train is ridiculously expensive rolleyes. Anyway, how difficult is it to get from Stansted Airport to the Eye and back, how long and what mode of transport?

Easy to do.

Get the Stansted Express.

Is pricey mind.

At other end choice of tube to Embankment/Charing Cross or a taxi

It's about 45 minutes in to Liverpool Street on train from Stansted and a further 25-30 minutes from Liverpool Street to London Eye by tube.

www.tfl.gov.uk for route planning from Liverpool Street Station to Waterloo (depends on time of day due to Waterloo and City line).

OK excellent, thank you. What do you mean by pricey?

Also, just a quick nooby type question here. You don't need a passport to fly internal flights do you?

Photo ID.

Book the train before.

Something like £30 each, each way if you don't - sorry I never had to pay.

Unfortunately not, it's sleasy jet. Only do Stansted from Newcastle.

If they can get to Liverpool St, Stanstead Express will get her there. They could walk (30/45 mins at a slow pace to the eye) or a taxi would cost no more than £20

Much cheaper if you pre-book.

And also look out for the 'normal' service - most only have one extra stop and cost about half.

Tickets are not interchangeable AFAIK.

Like I said I didn't have to pay on the line, but remember getting on with someone who did who hadn't paid before and feeling sickened that her flight was less than the train.

What about getting them an Oyster card each? only £5 for Zone 1-6 (which I presume is all of London?), take it this doesn't include the stansted express though?

How do they work

Just got prices, was £54 for the pair of return tickets. Not bad I suppose.

You can't buy an oyster at Stansted.

Get one at Tottenham (Gooner beaters) Hale and do what Dupont666 said.

Sounds about right.

Cheeky sods used to advertise you could 'simply' pay on the train and not buy on the station. They never mentioned the price hike for paying from your seat.

Before you book, check with the airline what ID they accept and make sure both parents have them.

For security reasons they don't accept any old photo ID.

My mother got to Stansted with only an OAP bus pass. It was the only photo ID she still owned.

She hadn't flown since dad died and her passport had run out, can't drive...

They refused to let her board an internal flight to Newcastle!

Pointing out that very few suicide bombers and highjackers are English ladies in their late 70's didn't help.
