How sentimental are you?
Discussion
I know this is a girly Q but I am in the process of trying to declutter and move out of my previous marital home, and I was starting to feel kind of cold that how little stuff I wanted to keep. (pretty much nothing) But then to add to this my neighbours house burnt down this week and I have been trying to help them with things they need but I can't imagine what it is like losing lots of personal stuff, and now I have gone into a total hoarder stage.
I think photos are a given to keep but then I have wedding photos? What do I do with them? Isn't it a crime to destroy photos? It should be.
I can't seem to find a nice happy medium line of what to keep and what to get rid of.
Do you keep every present someone has ever given you? Would you throw out everything related to an ex to start a mental 'new' or is it just an object and if you like it not care what it represents/who it came from?
Am I sentimental or just mental?

I finally went through my keepsake box a few months back.....It wasn't till the next day, and the bin men had been that I regretted binning some of it. But I suppose I still have the memories.
I also remember when I accidentally deleted all my past MSN conversations with a certain someone....I cried for hours

I'm the same, if I cleared out my room there would be loads of things that are sentimental to me. There's loads of random items that were picked up on various holidays that I can never see myself binning, most other people would bin most of the stuff I keep without giving it a second thought but I like little momentos. I'm sure 1 day when I move out it'll be a pain in the arse having to move everything & store it elsewhere but I like it so I'm not arsed
Nothing wrong with being sentimental.
I have managed to cut down what I have quite a bit over the last few years (thanks to numerous house moves), but still keep some special things.
Memories are great, but a litle something is even better.
Put your sensible head on and reduce what you have a little, especially if you have similar things.

i have a shoe box with things in it form past relationships, e.g tickets from movies,a pressed rose, valentines cards, letters they wrote. however much i dont like them now, they do bring back memories of the good times we had together...if none of the things you want to keep do this then bin them!!Anything thats too big to store in a shoe box, you dont need...unless its a car etc haha!
As for the wedding photos...if you have kids together..keep them. although you dislike their dad, its the start of the story of how they came to be. My mum kepts hers of her and my dads wedding, and im glad she did.

I was hoping this would be the reply, but some items for example are my Ipod. I like my ipod but it was quite a siginificant present, and my wine glasses, I have very expensive crystal wine glasses but they were a wedding present, smash them up in a rage? am not that angry
but keep them? I just don't know.

Get rid of the glasses. Don't keep purely because they are worth something, sounds like they have no meaning or use.
but keep them? I just don't know. Sell them or take to a charity shop if you are feeling kind.

The general rule is, if the gift came from your family / friends, you keep it. If the ex's, he keeps it.

That is a very good point about the wedding photos thanks, I passed a lot of family photos to my son for him to keep I guess the wedding ones would be no different. I have just realised I have a hat box with all the other stuff in, cinema tickets, love letters etc. I had forgot about that. :irk: Oh lord and the wedding ring, that is in there to.

I need more wine.
I also have a shoebox of past relationship stuff - pics etc. I don't make a secret of it and will let gf's look if they want. its not that I am pining for these girls, just that I know I'll be very old one day, hopefully with grandkids etc. and would like to be able to show them the things that shaped my life and have some visual triggers to share those memories.
