Ok so watching Full Metal Jacket tonight has prompted this but have we?

In WW2 the Germans were THE HUN, in this film, what I take to be fairly realistic, along with Platoon and all other ilk, the enemy were GOOKS. Now why both are probably politically incorrect are certainly accurate.

So why do we seem to treat the afghans with a level of respect? Murdering terrorist bds who we are trying to bomb into oblivion but heaven forbid we should bad mouth them.!

Drop bombs on them all day to a hero's welcome, but call one a rag head and commit career suicide. What happened to baddies being baddies?

Because we live in a world or easily accessible free information these days, so brainwashing a nation into good and evil isn't quite as easy as it used to be.

So you think they are in the right doing what they are doing? And we should now accept it because we now understand why?

OK point taken, maybe I didn't make my point clear enough though. How about "drop as much heavy ordnance on them as you require but don't call them nasty names" My point is that if you are at war you are at war. If you are prepared to bomb a people into oblivion (which as a nation we are) should it matter how you refer to them.

Apparently the Jawa don't like it up 'em.

Its human nature to reduce the enemy to a faceless stereotype. Saying no doesn't work (anyone else remember the story about Stills in the Falklands?)

or perhaps the question should be "if you're prepared to bomb a people into oblivion, do you have to hate them first?"

Surely the people emplyoyed in our forces are no longer permitted to have an opinion. More and more you hear soldiers/ pilots saying "we just had a job to do".! To me that almost takes any dignity away from the people they are fighting "yeah we kill them because we get a wage" is a long way from fighting for honour or belief!

War has become an economic commodity, hence my comment about not being allowed to say anything derogetory about the enemy. What they gonna do? Sue you? Along with damages for their fked up buildings?

With all due respect (not much due at the moment) if the army were operating with your attitude then i'm sure the death toll in Afghanistan would be much higher.

Think about it. Go into Afghanistan acting all gung ho, disrespecting the locals how long do you thing before they all turned against you?

Shame on you you clueless idiot. Come back and talk to me when you have obtained an education!

OK in laymans terms (for the idiots who don't understand my point).

When a soldier or pilot killed three enemies in previous wars he was a hero or an ace\ now he's given a sympathetic ear as a victim because he's had to kill a few enemies.

That wasn't your point at all. Your point was that we're allowed to kill them, but not to be rude to them, which Shaid addresses quite nicely.

Not sure the Taliban have an airforce, and pretty damned certain that people who kill face to face have never celebrated quantity.

Having met a few soldiers who have actually been in some action i think they need all the sympathy/care they can get. Some of them are hard wired to take a life but many aren't! The psychological effects are serious, damaging and often long term.

Another young boy who misses my point and another reason why we are in there a decade longer than we need to be thus endandering lives for far longer than necessary!

what's happening in Iraq and Afghanistan is a long way from honour and I doubt many intelligent people on the ground have much belief in it either.

You mean an education of sufficient enough a standard to point out where you should have used commas/apostrophes in your post, or another one? FYI, I'd be willing to bet my education more than stands up to your own, but that's irrelevant.

You're a bigot who's searching for an excuse.

Wasnt aware we press ganged people into joining the armed forces.. One person and one person put them there.....THEM! After a rigorous course to get selected. Save me the sob story, they joined THE fkING ARMY not St Johns Ambulance. Last time I looked Army involved going to war and killing people, and last time I looked in this country it was VOLUNTARY!

Will you please be realistic! It is not you who will be facing the fighting in Afghanistan (i suppose your next post is going to be your ex-army and hard etc etc).

The girls and boys who are there need to maintain trust and respect from the locals in order to gather intelligence, weed out the Taliban etc.

If you merely went in there and trod all over the Afghans then the army would be having an even harder time trying to fight the 'enemy' which would mean a hell of a lot more coffins being driven through Wootton Bassett and even more likelyhood of attacks in the UK.

Full Metal Jacket is a good film however today is reality. If you fail to understand that then....
