Got to work today (Barratts housing development) to find a few scrotes had been in over the weekend and trashed 8 unfinished houses by ripping out electric cables and copper pipe! I now have the next 2-3 days off work while everything is put right, funny thing is there is hardly any copper used now as it is mostly plastic, they can't have got more than £10 worth in scrap.

There was an article on the news a couple of days ago about pikeys nicking cabling from the railways for scrap. How do they do it without getting electrocuted?

Damaged a pair of CAT ladders last week attempting to enter a parking garage i should probably of thought twice about. Ripped the hook clean off the top. They're going in for repair on wednesday, Caught someone trying to knick em out of my parents garden yesterday. Seems alot of effort really in that they're heavy (And stand out quite well) so would need to be put on a roof rack to get away with them and you wouldn't get much scrapping them in. Thieves don't tend to think about what they're knicking if theres a chance they can get money for it, they'll take it. If it doesnt work out they'll just dump it anyway and its cost them nothing in the first place. Utter scum.

they steal my trollies from the supermarket I manage all the time. I caught some kids knicking baskets once too, he had some shopping in it as he walked off down the road with it so I grabbed it off him and tipped his shopping onto the pavement. It was eggs, shame.

Theres a guy who goes round all the industrial estates where i work collecting scrap metal, nice guy as he actually asks before he takes, although now everyone just leaves it out for him. He always has loads of old cable in the back of his truck from a place i visit reguarly, must be a ballache to get the copper out of it for very little gain

They drag the cables onto the line and let the trains cut them. Pretty fecking dangerous.

Unfortunately people like this will always exist in our society. Even though the majority of them accidentally remove themselves from it in the process of nicking cable.

I'll try and tell you the abridged version of this story.....

Bloke used to drink in our local. Typical scumbag, claiming disability, got five children by multiple partners etc, claimed the gubbermint was at fault because he couldn't afford to feed his spawn but would be in the pub every night and works on the side anyway.

He got nicked stealing 'metal' from some site fairly local to us. His van was there, (no tax/MOT/insurance, etc), but they didn't catch him driving it and it wasn't in his name so, hey, no problem.

So he employs the services of the local 'legal aid' lawyer, (who also drinks in the pub!), and his case is worked on............

Cut to a week or so later..............

He arrives in the pub with shorn and bleached hair and different, (actually fairly presentable!), clothes. He's also bought a dog. (There's more about this in a bit!)

So the defense lies in the hope that a) the arresting officer can't recognise him because his appearance has changed and, b) his comment during the arrest about looking for 'general scrap' alludes to him allegedly looking for his dog that conveniently called 'General Scrap' while out for a walk.

He got off with it and the motoring offences were disregarded because he'd done a deal beforehand.

He's still at it. He makes no bones about it.

I hope he finds a live cable soon!!

They know which ones are the 650v and generally avoid cutting them.

If they really want it the let the trains cut it for them.

I heard a funny story about some people in Newbiggin - which is a small fishing village in Northumberland and the world epicentre of inbreeding, so I was told.

They came up with a flawless plan to steal overhead power cable by throwing an anchor over it and pulling it down, with a metal chain attached.

Just tried to google it and apparently cable theivery is a fairly hazardous profession! Couldn't find the Newbiggin one, but South Africa seems to figure a lot.

There was an incident around my area a couple of weeks ago where some scrotes had nicked part of some metal in the power station (or something like that). Our whole estate was out of power for a while. Quite an absurd thing to do. confused

Has this theft of 'scrap' business always been as prevalent as it is now? I realise scrap prices have gone through the roof but still, it seems like an awful lot of work for not much gain. Surely must be easier to just shoplift?

A Place I know had a break in with some scum removing part of a wall to get to a safe that had a fiver in it...
I think they could get more money for that kind of labour if they were doing something useful isntead.

In electrical substations the easiest place to take copper from is the earthing structure. This not only means people will go off supply when fixed of no alternative point of supply is available, but also means a very nasty surprise for any engineer to whom the lack of earthing is not apparent.

There has been quite a few
injurys caused by this and now extra
care, and time, must be spent not only to check why the circuit has tripped but also if the network is in a safe and earthed state.

I was going to post something about the overheadeans but it ended up sounding like a manual in how to do it so decided not too! As might get in trouble.
