My neice is 16 shortly. Usually I just send her £30 to spend as she wants but this year I wanted to do something more for her. She hasn't had the easiest of times recently. Her Dad died quite suddenly 3 years ago and her Mum has been seriously ill this last year and is now housebound and largely immobile. Of late she has been doing her GCSE's, cooking, cleaning, shopping and even decorating the house (top to bottom) of an evening. Not much time for doing the things a 15 year girl usually does and as they don't have much money she doesn't get much for herself.

So, any ideas? Her 'prom' is coming up so I thought it would be nice for her to have a new dress or her hair done professionally but beyond that I am at a loss.

Ideas?

Is Prom over here like Prom in the US? If so a nice car to take her? Or a stretch for her and her mates?

Good voucher for TK Maxx or somewhere really nice so she can go and choose a dress? Coast, Jigsaw, Monsoon?

Is there a present like an iPod or something similar that she particularly wants (difficult without asking)?!

£30 for a nice car/limo/hair done for a girl?

For that price you'd probably be looking at maybe her nails done professionally?
When we got out limo for our leavers ball it was £200 for a 12 person one...

Book some summer holidays for her? Especially if she's done well at school.

Nice thought but seriously I wouldn't only those who don't pay tax seem to rent these for Chardonay[sic] and Rooney to go to their prom in.

Afraid I am short on ideas here but I wonder if you said to her you have a budget of £x0, go out and buy yourself some things you really want and send me the receipts and I'll send you a cheque. That way she gets a day out and you will know that she has what she wants and that it is stuff for HER.

This, if within budget. Would be much more memorable than a dress for a school prom I would think. Eurostar to Paris?

Good call!

If the logistics, care for Mum and budget allow and she is 'old' enough. Even if it were 'just' a day trip.

At 16, she'd want to go on holiday or Eurostar with friends - she can't go alone... but nice idea.

The budget/receipts idea sounds good.

Limos are the norm at Proms, as this is PH, i'm sure we could find a Supercar owner who would gladly lend a hand...? Might not make for a particularly elegant disembarkation of the vehicle though. And it can't spoil the hair.
