A&E ****wittery this week (Where's Darwin...
Discussion
...when you need him!?)
Accident & Emergency.
10pm - 24 y/o female. Two day history of not opening bowels.
11:30pm - 38 y/o female. Pain 'everywhere'. Saw GP the day before, gave her paracetamol. She's not happy and wants a CT.
1:30am - 36 y/o male. "So I've had this rash for 2 weeks".
3am - 28 y/o female. Chest pain for 6 months. "I'm worried I'm having a heart attack".
49 y/o Male, one day history of blocked nose, can't get to sleep as has to breathe through his mouth.
I sh*t you not.
F*ckwittery of epic proportions. I could go on...

The fact that these people are alive and continuing to breed (and waste my time in A&E) is surely evidence against Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

I had near-ruptured appendix a few years ago and they were just making me comfortable in A&E while they sorted out stuff like theatre and a recovery ward, when someone was kicking off about being bumped back on the queue. Turned out they had suitably stupid ailment that didn't warrant A&E anyway (cant remember what as the pain was really bad at this point). Doctor stands his ground, young chap too, and tells them to sit down as he has a patient that could die!!!!
They shut up and move away, Doc comes in to see me and explains he was talking about me, but I am not going to die. He then has a 5 minute rant about the morons who come into A&E and waste his time. He was really funny and it was really great to hear the other side of the story! He did finish it off saying that he found his job massively rewarding though, even with the mouth-breathing morons who waste his time - fixing the real emergencies made up for everything else.
If only I could remember what the funny ones were - I was in pain I was laughing so much.... or was it the appendix?

List of idiots

Amazing. Do you just send them away?List of idiots

Although it works both ways to an extent.
I had the following conversation with nurse who was doing a diagnosis on me:
Me: Ive snapped my achilles tendon
Nurse: Ok-I need to do some test to see if you have
Me: I have. It snapped and its not there any more- look you can even see its gone.
Nurse: I need to just check. Can you stand on your tiptoes for me
Me: Of course not, I don't have a tendon there
Nurse: Well try. I need to see whether you can.
Me (stood still): Im trying as we speak. Nothing is happening.
Nurse: Still not sure. I need to get a doctor to look at you
Only ever had to go there a few times over the last ten years, always for other people. Each time there seems to be a random assortment of drunks (it is always after midnight that I seem to have gone), somebody who has been assaulted with a snooker cue, and just a couple of genuine cases who haven't brought their misfortune upon themselves!
One time, as a young lad, I had to go there after a lad we were out with got the crap kicked out of him in the toilets of a club. I was out of it, so went into a toilet cubicle and had a kip. Got woken up a couple of hours later by coppers opening the door, and decided to walk home upon being ejected

I've only ever been to A&E when it's been serious so rarely get to spend much time in the waiting area with the coughs, colds and so on. Last time I went I injured myself on the Thursday evening (came off a bike at about 30mph) but waited until Friday morning before going as I knew I'd get seen a lot more quickly then (turned out it was a broken wrist and various patches of tarmac-tattooing).
It's obviously a nationwide problem as we received a leaflet in the post last week with suggestions of what to do in various circumstances - lots of options highlighted BEFORE going to A&E.

If A&E have a cunning plan to be as rude and condescending as possible to everyone then it's working. I think twice about going now after my last visit.
Sliced my finger open (down to the bone) and the nurse said put a plaster on it (and even shook her head). It's only when I pulled the lump of skin back and blood pissed out did she jump into action.
I knew a triage nurse and she said they used to wind people up on purpose.
It seems they are very quick to bring the old assault or abuse card out, judging by the amount of warning posters, when in fact it's them that are the antagonists.
Change your attitude and your job will be a whole lot better.

Sorry but seriously....My girlfriend works in A&E at the moment and I think that if you had to deal 90% of the time with idiots who don't need to be there and then kick off about not being seen then I think you might change your attitude to the staff.
Maybe you should work in there for a week and then see what you think?

Are you serious? You are actually saying that A&E personnel assault people????

Seriously though. My point I've made in bold above is what I'm getting at. It's a chore for most hospital staff and I can understand why. Years ago nurses in A&E were a special breed and could deal with all the things that's been mentioned above.
A&E staff should be made up of experienced, mature career nurses (natron types?) with younger underlings who want a career in that department.
I'm affraid it all too late now. The rot has set in.

As a matter of morbid interest, is there a point where this would become an emergency? Is there a record? 10pm - 24 y/o female. Two day history of not opening bowels.
