Health and safety gone mad.... again
Discussion
Was at the O2 the other night for dancing on Ice (The things you do for the other half) Anyway. Got some drinks, a bottle of beer and a bottle of water which they removed the lids from. I asked for the tops back so as not to spill them if they got knocked over only to be told NO. Health and saftey we have to take them off in case you use them as missiles!!
My reply? oh well at least I can still throw the bottle then. The bloke behind the bar smiled and said yes stupid rule I know but I don't make them!

Shouldn't this be in the Lounge?
Anyway, i don't see a big deal myself. They give you an opened bottles of beers in the pubs/bars too, don't they?
Agree, it was their reasoning. They keep the lid but the bottle would still make a good missile. Had it been so they don't spend hours picking up discarded bottle tops this would make more sense.Anyway, i don't see a big deal myself. Manchester Arena won't let you take in your own food or drinks on the grounds of H&S.
You have to bin it when you hand your ticket in.
However they will quite happily sell you their food and drink once you get in...
And to make money no doubt. The O2 was ripping the arse out of food and drink. £4.10 for a tiny pot of ice cream I heard the couple in front of me moaning about. You have to bin it when you hand your ticket in.

About nine years ago I got a takeaway cappuccino in London Victoria Station, and asked for it without a lid (as the choccy sprinkles stick, necessitating unseemly licking). I was told that they were required to fit lids in case I spilt coffee on myself and got scalded.
FFS. Guess it serves me right for ordering a girly drink.

The HSE website has a myth of the month section debunking things like the banning of conkers (a teacher, pissed off at filling out H&S forms for a school adventure trip decided to ban conkers under H&S rules to get some publicity- it worked!), or banning throwing sweets at pantos (the theatres were worried about compensation if anyone got hurt by a wayward sweetie- which says more about the general public and ambulance chasing lawers than the HSE!)

You're the first one to mention the HSE. Surley any establishment/company/school etc has obligations to keep their staff and customers in a healthy and safe environment and some might feel that throwing sweets around, or handing out hot drinks in cups with no lids, or handing out bottles that could be re-filled, sealed and used as missiles might be a 'bit' un-safe.
If you want a real eye-opener into the lenghts H&S can go to pop into Blockbuster video and ask to rent any 3-D film on dvd.
They can only rent you the 2-D version because if they gave you the 3-D glasses they could be liable for any injury you might sustain in your home with them (apparently).
I suggested they could give out an instructional manual on how to put on a pair of glasses...which didn't go down to well with the cashier.

It's got nothing to do with Health and Safety and everything to do with profit
I first encountered this at a football game, paid £1.50 for a bottle of coke and wasn't allowed the lid for the same reason, they said nothing about the change in my pocket or my lighters
If I had the lid, that bottle of coke would've lasted me the whole 90 mins, as I didn't and therefore had to hold the thing all the time, I kept taking sips, cue half time and me (like a mug) buying another bottle

Well, teh HSE are the people who make & enforce the Health & Safety regulations...
It's all about risk managment- if you are really scared about somebody being hurt by a flying sweetie, only use soft sweets like jelly babies and not boiled sweets. But it's easier to just ban trhowing sweets. What is the real risk that a bottle will be refilled, capped and thrown? I don't know- perhaps the bottle top thing has more to do with liscencing laws- the difference between an off licence and licesenced premises?
