...during interview, when asked to talk about a time when he had taken a decision and stuck with it despite opposition, gave an example of when he was disciplined at work for spending too much time on the internet (he was logged at 3-5 hours a week)? Ok, so he took and stood by his decision to appeal against the discipline on the grounds that he was far from being the worse offender and others had not been disciplined, but I had 2 concerns when this example fell out of his mouth:

1) Am I taking on a slacker who spends his work time on Ebay/Redtube/PH and can't see an empoyer might not like that?

2) Is he that stupid that he can't see that this isn't the best example to use?

Looking at your post count, pot and kettle spring to mind....laugh

Its not really the best example for them to have given, one specific to there role would have been more appropriate. Can you just ban there internet access if you give them the job?

That is a pretty dumb answer to give. But then I guess at least he was honest..

I would not recruit this person.

They are supposed to be selling themselves at an interview and whilst they may have had insufficient work to keep them busy in a past role hence spending so much time on the internet, the fact that they appealed the punishment is quite telling. Also, I would have some concern over the fact that they do not mind a new employer knowing this about them.

It would indicate something of an attitude to me, and not the kind that I would be looking for in a new employee.

If he's on Redtube he's ok but ask if he goes on lybehistube as well.

If he does bin him as might be one of them.

It strikes me that he couldn't give a work-related example, which probably means that he's never had that kind of responsibility. Or that he has, and he's never stood by his convictions.

Is 5 hours a lot of time to spend on the net per week??
That's only 1 hour a day!

I guess I'm biased as I'm in IT support and a lot of our value comes from just being available when needed.
Might do nothing all day, then have a real intense hour. I'm really getting paid for that hour.

Give him a big swerve, way to many reasons in that one answer to avoid him!

If he can come out with a stupid answer like that imagine what he's going to be saying to your clients/customers.

Was in recruitment for many years and would cry if one of my candidates had come out with that at an interview

So 30 minutes to 1 hour a day spread over an 8 hour day? Not that bad. Besides, if he's not missing deadlines, I wouldn't care.

Crap example to give but a rubbish question too IMO.

And 3-5 hours a week? That's nothing for a desk-bound worker.

The question is fine, it's a competancy based question so in theory you're not actually just looking at the example they give, it's about how they structure the answer and the way they present the information. Saying that you should look at giving an example that ends with a positive outcome and not one that brings into question your work ethos.
