I've noticed a worrying trend recently, nothing is made to last. It's not even as if things are noticably cheaper then they were say 20 years ago but it seems that everything is made to be thrown away after next to no time. For example I use a wheely trolley for work (I'm not a air stewardess though!!) and I've always bought Samsonite trolleys for use everyday. They always used to last 7 years or so but the last two only lasted 2 years a pop before falling to bits. It seems to be the same with almost everything- I use an umbrella that was built it the 60's and it still works perfectly. My wife seems to go through about 2 per year, most because they are flimsy and over engineered- even the expensive ones. Don't get me started about cars! The days of being able to do a quick fix with a spanner in your garage are long gone unless you have the diagnostic kit and a suitable laptop.

I know I sound like an old git but I'm not even that old, it just infuriates me that quality products seem so few and far between.

you've only noticed this recently? Have you been in cryogenic suspension for a decade or so?

Easier to buy stuff from pound shops. It's tat, but it's cheap tat.

It breaks/fails - so you buy it again. A vicious circle almost. Manufacturers end up lining up their pockets.

You know what my Grandad said to his friend when he said "yes Jim, they don't make cars like they used to"

"thank god for that, they were ste"

I can see your point but it has now got to the point where you can't do the most simple of jobs without messing up the diagnostics and having to take it into the main dealer- at least that's how it seems on my steed.

The issue is.. (any more so with hand tools for example)... Is that because most people buy the cheap chineese tat, the demand for the "proper" quality tools has declined, thus bumping the price of the quality goods higher and higher... I now only buy the quality tools, even with the premium price.... buy once....use for a lifetime!

I thought Snap-On had actually got a bit cheaper in the past few years?
