After having a little bit of a walk around our office it occurred to me there are a lot of 20 and 30 year old people that work in this company, and then just a few in the 40s and 50s doing higher managerial and director roles.

So where do all these 20 and 30 year old employees go to? Are there companies out there with lots of older people working in them to counter act the predominantly 85% we have in this company? Or are there enough early retirements, family commitments (having kids etc) or lots of little consultant companies employing them all to make sure there are enough jobs for everyone to move to?

We aren't talking 60+, more the "Late-Middle Aged" 40-60 year olds.

The average age in my section at work is something like 43 - take me out of the equation and it shoots up to 50. Most of the folks in my department are between 40 and 60 - but I also see a lot of retired folk taking in a bit of cash by working the checkouts at the local supermarket.

There's a real issue with anyone in their late 40s onwards getting decent employment. Cue 5 people in their 50s saying they have a good job (whilst demonstrating little understanding of statistics).

I agree, 20 years in an industry and you suddenly find all the jobs you look at want a degree that didn't exist when you started or buzz words like dynamic and flexible which are code for 20 years old.

I agree that some head to B&Q and other shop destinations, but that isn't what all of us in our 20/30s are trying to head for in our life... I am sure most want to be high up execs at the end of it, so do the majority of people just never realise this dream (or does life refocus them later on)?

Is this particular to your line of work Pete? It's certainly not like that where I work. We have loads of 60 + year olds hanging on to the bitter end, refusing to retire.

Are you perhaps employed in an industry that didn't really exist when these 40 - 60 year olds were getting qualifications. Or one which actively only employs young people, in which case you'll soon need some new qualifications. hehe

How dare you smile

I would guess a huge number of such people are in quite senior positions - so out of sight of the "general public".
Look at all the CEOs of important companies and businesses. You will find that a huge number of them are over 50.
Also, top judges, barristers, surgeons and other professionals are of that age group.

I guess it could be the industry, especially working in media and dealing with lots of other media or agency companies... but then publishing has been around for donkey years.

Now off to get some more qualifications, as scared I will be replaced by a 20 year old with buzz words, that or I will have to move one seat to my right and start working on Classic and Sports Car (they are much more distinguished, older and wiser) biggrin

Lloyds TSB helpline. Always manned by lovely ladies of aging years. Very helpful too.

(except for the bloke this afternoon who sounded very good looking indeed)

Yes I spend a lot of time resetting passwords...
