Something electrical breaks down inside three months, so...

...am I entitled to a new one, or do I have to accept it being repaired?
Item in question is a 32" TV bought new in December, that has suddenly lost its picture. The repairman is coming tomorrow, but should he be allowed to fit a new part or whatever, or am I entitled to demand a brand new tv?

The manufacturer is at liberty to decide if a repair or replacement is required.... I imagine a repair is cheaper... so this is what will be done... if the same part fails again, I would argue that the TV is not fit for purpose and therefore a replacement should be supplied...
But in this instance.... you have to live with 3 month old tech I am afraid!

Good grief, is there no customer power any more?
There was a time the customer actually meant something, some phrase like "the customer is occasionally right"
To add insult to injury they expected me to wait until a week on Saturday for the engineer to come out, to which I replied that it was just not acceptable, and eventually called head office to see what can be done. They will 'try' to get a guy here tomorrow.
How about I simply drag it back to Comet and demand a replacement? I guess I'd get stiffed there too?

Well, it can certainly work. Especially if you wait until Saturday, and when there are enough people in the store, walk in and demand (loudly) to speak to the manager about this c**p TV that has gone wrong in just three months. I suspect there is a strong chance you'll get a new TV within a few minutes...... There is no legal obligation for them to get you a new TV, but bad customer ranting in store may well pursuade them that it's easier for them to shut you up to give you a new TV sharpish..

Hey, peoples.........three months old....no picture....ten days to get a tech out.... etc etcI had similar issue recently after a very expensive camera lens stoped working under warrenty period and I wanted a replacement.
I was advised to look at my rights here:
http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/after_you_buy/kno...
or to contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
Under the Sale of Goods Act you are entitled to a repair or replacement. Any arbitrary limit they impose is nonsense, they are obliged under UK consumer law to repair your purchase. If they do not repair it this time, it is not unreasonable to require a replacement.
If it is cheaper for them to repair it they will do that, if not they will replace it. I contacted the manufacturer direct and they very quickly repiared in less than a week as oppose to the 4 week guideline as I explained it would be of major inconvenience to me.
I was also linked to this which might help.

As has been said, you have no right to a replacement. The fault must be repaired within a reasonable time frame which would be in the order of 14-21 days or thereabouts in most cases.
It may turn out that when the engineer visits the set is deemed uneconomical to repair and then they will provide a replacement but that is obviously discretionary dependant on fault.

He may also turn up and say 'Its not plugged in missus' or ' Your aerail has fell off the roof' or 'why is there a wii controller stuck out of the front of it' or 'its sitting in a pool of water' or ' why have you called us when its your sky box that has gone off' like i do several times a week!
I'm reading via my phone, but can't see that you've mentioned the name of the TV manufacturer? In my experience the more reputable ones will replace.
In the case of my six month old Hotpoint mid-range washing machine whose door fell off, I was given a replacement top of the range machine as it was their policy for manufacturer faults.
Good luck. You might have it sorted in time for whichever James Bond classic is on over Bank Holiday

What's the problem with repairing it? If when repaired its as good as it originally was then theres no issue surely? It won't affect its resale value if you ever do resell it.
Fair enough if it keeps breaking then exchange it.
But seriously??? You're making a deal out of nothing here. Something's gone wrong with a product and they're sending someone out the next day to have a look at it! Talk about unreasonable customers.

Don't repair it take it back. 3 months is unreasonable. Check your rights, not Pistonheads.

If we wanted a used TV that has been taken to bits and had spares fitted we would have gone to a fvckin' car boot sale!!! There is a reason we spent £300,and not £30.Fair enough if it keeps breaking then exchange it.

If you bought a brand new car and it siezed needed a new motor after three months driving would you be so quick to accept?????

Your rights are that you have to accept a repair, anything else is goodwill.

Nah, b
ks. I'd just take it back to the store. Preferably on a busy Saturday to add potential embarrasment hazard. After all, if they want to fix it, fine- They can sell it as "ex-demo" afterwards.
I agree with this.

Just decide what you want, and get it.
3 months is too soon for a telly to fail.
They will probably concede.
If not, tell them you are unemployed and have feck all else to do except stand outside the shop telling all their customers what a bunch of shysters they are. Tell them your brother-in-law is a journalist at the local paper, and he's going to come down with a photographer. If that doesn't work then tell them to get head office on the phone on the spot. Tell them you will report the feckers to trading standards. Stage a dirty protest.
Etc etc.
