How lively is your local town at present?
Discussion
I went out in Nottingham last night for the first time in about six months, met up with a mate, had some beers and went for food. A very pleasant evening all in all, but Nottingham (or at least the bits we saw) was dead. And this was on the first Friday after pay day.
Ten years ago you could go out in Nottingham any night of the week and it would be busy. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and even Sundays would often see queues at the doors of bars. Nowadays that is clearly not happening. Places are closed all over the place.
I have pondered what the problem is. Is it the smoking ban? The recession? Too many places pursuing too few people?
Nottingham does have a feckless local council which pursues poorly thought out political agendas with regard to transportation, town planning and economic development, but I am not sure these are the only causes.
So, my question is, how is your local town's nightlife performing relative to how it was doing perhaps five or ten years ago?

Out in Edinburgh last night. Fairyl quiet considering it's a very good pub in the centre of town, it was pay day and it was a few minutes walk from where the Beltane Festival was on.
People still feeling the pinch a bit I think.
I was in Edinburgh last night too (George Street then West End/New Town) and it was busy. Agree that mid-week drinking seems quieter than it used to be but Edinburgh at the weekends is bouncing. People still feeling the pinch a bit I think.

Nottingham is only really busy on a saturday night now. This started when we started hearing about the "credit crunch" and all that.
It's a shame isn't it. The city used to have such a good vibe about it the whole time and if you needed something to do you could always pitch up at one of the popular bars for a bite to eat and be surrounded by folk.Manks

The Friday of a bank holiday weekend tends to be quiet.
I live in York, the nightlife seems to be getting busier. New places are still opening, not too many have closed down.
busier? god. I live in York, the nightlife seems to be getting busier. New places are still opening, not too many have closed down.
there is always a nissan gtr parked near bohemia. (had to look it up to see what it was).
