Just travelled under London Bridge (going westbound) and i noticed a red symbol on the east side of the bridge. Does anyone know the history to it?

London Bridge travels, North to South. There's only one bridge that lies East/West.

But if you were travelling under it, rather than over it, you would be travelling parallel to it, so, east to west.

Does it just mark the centre (highest part) of the arch? i.e. somewhere to aim your bow as the arches are quite low.

My error; it was the op saying "east side of the bridge" that threw me.

Sorry I should have described the symbol. From what I can remember it is a circle with a small + above it and the you have a triangle over the top of the circle.

I may have been a marker that you keep on the left as you pass it, would that make sense?

To mark the centre of the bridge where it lifts up?

Are you thinking of Tower Bridge?

At a guess I'd say it's a form of safe water mark.

Sorry, but it's neither or those symbols. I can't even find it on Google.
