Buying an engagement ring online
Discussion
Hey lads and ladies,
I'm just about to buy an engagement ring online and am just having last minute fears over spending such a large amount of cash unseen.
Anyone had any experience in this department? ZS Diamonds is the site I'm using, they seem fairly clued up and I've spoken to them - all seems above board. What reassures me is that they do have a physical shop that I could go and visit - but it would be an entire day out and the O/H would get suspicious!
Prices are amazing compared with the highstreet.
Reassurance please :-)

As with all other diamond threads, speak to Lord Summerisle and Nightmare and save yourself a lot of money!
Agreed.I took great advice from LS, and purchased online from Whiteflash. No regrets

Distance selling rules should apply, generally full refund in 7 days quibble free. Check terms on the site as well and buy on a credit card

I recently bought an engagement ring from Blue Nile and I can thoroughly recommend them. Lots of info on their site, knowledgeable when you phone them, service was excellent and I ended up with a ring valued 50% more than I paid for it.
Most importantly though, she loved it
My approach to buying unseen was to actually go and look at a lot of rings in shops so I had a fair idea of what different settings and diamonds looked like in the flesh. Armed with this knowledge, I then spec'd up something similar on the Blue Nile site and grinned to myself when I saw the price.
Delivery was on the day they said it would be, in an otherwise unmarked courier envelope.
Good luck in whichever approach you take.
ETA You are covered under distance selling rules so will have 14 days to return regardless of who you use and what their policy is. Blue Nile will also resize the ring for you free of charge if necessary.

I was going to buy on Bluenile until I contacted Nightmare. I wanted a 2ct diamond and platinum ring. Until I went to see the 4 diamonds that Nightmare had selected I didn't realise how different diamonds of the same carat weight could look. I just thought 2 carats in a certain cut was 2 carats. This is not the case which is why I'm glad I bought from Nightmare in the end.
I suggest you at least have a chat with him before commiting to Bluenile

Totally agree with this and maybe I wasn't clear in my post, but when I said I went around a few shops and bought something similar, what I actually meant was "lost weeks and weeks of my life looking at rings and diamonds, getting advice on no just the 4 Cs but all the other attributes that affect the quality of a diamond. After narrowing it down to around 30 diamonds, I went through a further elimination process until I got the one I wanted".I suggest you at least have a chat with him before commiting to Bluenile
Apologies if it sounded like I went to Earnest Jones, thought "that size'll do" and bought the cheapest diamond of that size from Blue Nile!
Thanks folks, It does seem that buying online is common and acceptable!
Had a look at Bluenile and spec'd up the exact diamond parameters (4c's as well as fluro, polish, symm etc) and while they are slightly cheaper than ZSdiamonds, they don't have the right setting I have in mind.
Tempted to give nightmare and LS a bell as they seem to be getting a lot of mentions, but I think I'll give ZS Diamonds a chance, see what it looks like, get a valuation and then exert my right of return if it isn't up to scratch!
Exciting....and scary...

Mark up on diamonds is around 100%, you won't get that when buying through Nightmare (Howard.) Regarding stones and the 4C's, I found the biggest influence was the cut grade when I was learning about them. The difference between a E/Excellent and a D/Good was night and day. Personally, I would never buy mail order after learning what I did from Howard.
The other bonus of buying through Howard is his partner Matt, a true old school jeweller who loves what he does. You will get a completely one off ring for a fraction of what it would cost on the high street. (Or as my Wife managed... much more ring for the budget I had in mind!)
You need to at least speak to Howard before ordering. We look at high street jewellers now and the quality and price of their goods is disgusting.
