I'll hopefully soon be starting a new job. For the first 3 months I'll be based elsewhere in the country (Portsmouth), moving back to the London area after that time.

I'll obviously need somewhere to live there as it's too far to commute daily. What's the best way of finding somewhere for 3 months (I'd rather rent a 1 bedroom flat (nothing fancy) and flat rental contracts are a minimum of 6 as I understand things).

Talk to letting agents. I explained my situation and got a 3 month lease which rolled in to a month by month. They may have land lords prepared to accept this.

Try spareroom.co.uk and filter Portsmouth search results by 'short lets'. Most will be flatshares but you do get the odd advert for 1 bed places.

depending on where you live in London, I would say Portsmouth is comuteable. Just over 90 mins - Waterloo to Portsmouth - also depends on where you job is in Portsmouth I suppose, but it is possible. Long day, but possible and could potentially avoid paying premium for a short let etc.

I work in the city, and there is a bloke here that comes in from Pompey every day!

There are also alot of holiday villages in that area, they will do longer lets. Explain to them that you are looking for something basic and clean for 12 weeks and im sure they will find you something.

Try Southern Leisure - I know they rent caravans out for longer than normal at a good price, I think the ladys name is Fiona. Its a small park with a bar and close to the city centre.

I was going to say, wouldn't a b&b be a decent shout? 5 days a week for 12 weeks?

You really won't have a problem finding a three month let...irrespective of what the agents have to say about it.

Worst case scenario is, if poss, to offer them the whole three months up front.

My old man has a b&b in Farnborough and is always welcoming to a long term booking smile Better than travelodge in every way, proper breakfast too!

At least on the commute to Portsmouth in the morning you should get a seat and the same on the way back. Going against the flow like.

There's assorted B&B's in Portsmouth, used to pay £26 a night about five years back, if you only need it four nights a week then it's a decent option.

Good site and free to use as well.

Post up an add. Plenty of landlords with empty places, much better to have a tenant for 3 months than be empty.

I've got a nice little place half way between Pompey and London, in lovely Horsham. There's regular trains to both places too, takes about an hour each. I guess it's a compromise to live halfway housebut I'd be more than happy to talk, so PM me if interested.
