Any vets in? Prednisolone/Prednicare
Discussion
My dog is on 2.5mg doses (twice weekly) of Prednisolone for an allergy, issued on a repeat prescription. He then has Piriton should be need it between does.
I collected his new prescription this week. I gave him a tablet in the week and a Piriton yestrerday but he had a terrible night scratching, which is most unusual after either Piriton or Predisolone. Today I noticed a slight difference in the tablets the vet had sent to the odd tablet I had left from his last prescription. That made me look at the label and this time they have given him 5mg Prednicare.
Google tells me they are both anti-inflamatory and have a use with alergies but I am now a bit concerned that I have been mixing these two drugs over the past week, or have either withdrawn his Predisolone.
I will ring the vet in the morning but in the meantime dioes anybody know if these two drugs are the same? Tey both have contra indications that they should be withdrawn slowly and obviously it looks like I have stopped his Prediosolone and restarted him on Predicare.

Prednicare is the trade name for Prednisolone.
As you say, whatever you do, don't suddenly stop either of them. If you've got 2.5mg and 5mg tablets, you need to reduce from 5 to 2.5 for a week or so, then stop.
ETA: if you're saying that his dose doubled from 2.5 to 5mg, I'd say that he's much more likely to have side-effects. I don't know about dags, but when I was on Pred I had loads of side effects and even more side effects when tapering off.
Horrible things

Thanks for that. He is on 2.5mg twice a week ( so 5mg a week) although usually he goes 4 or 5 days between does, lonmger if the piriton helps, and longer after a batch and when his fur is short and unable to trap pollen etc.As you say, whatever you do, don't suddenly stop either of them. As said, the prednisolone is the same as prednicare. If the dog is scratching more the it is very likely that the dose needs to be increased if the choice of treatment is correct, however, this must be in consultation with your vet, whether you are increasing or decreasing the dose. On the good side, 2.5mg twice weekly is a very small dose, so there is plenty of scope for increasing the dose if required. However, corticosteroids do have side effects, that increase both with time and dose, so they should be used carefully and almost as a last resort when other forms of treatment have been excluded. When they are used properly, they are superb drugs for stopping itchy dogs scratching themselves to pieces. HTH

I came off a large daily dosage last week and have been feeling awful ever since.
