So, it was VE Day on Saturday. RIP all those who died in the great crusade.

Here's a hypothetical question, what would have happened if everyone left in Germany was a fanatical Nazi and refused to surrender? So Hitler kills his dog, his new wife and then himself and Donitz takes over.

What if Donitz had refused to sign the document and continue the futile resistance? Then the next guy. And the next. The Russians reach Berlin and start killing everybody. At what point would the allied forces stop if nobody legally in charge of the country would surrender or there actually was nobody legally in charge?

Would the allies just have set up camp in Berlin and declared Germany their own?

Just a topic we've been talking about over coffee in the office today (after the obligatory conversations regarding "breasts of the russian cost girl" and "that project manager is a tt").

Hmmmmm?

If it was Donitz, he would of got them all on a few subs and caused some hassle for a few weeks.

Seriously though, the amount of German people that were through and through Nazi's was relatively few. I believe a futile resistance would of been established, and suitably quashed in the Russian sectors, as they pillaged and raped there way through any reprisals.

The allies may of seen an extended campaign, but if no person of legal authority actually declared peace then I would of though a interim puppet government would of been set up, hopefully by any remaining Jews just for ironies sake.

ETA: By Allies do you mean everyone fighting Germany at the time? or Allies as in us lot and the US, free Free French and Polish and the separate entity of Russia?

As in the concluding stages of the war it was pretty much a land grab between the allies and the Russians, so I think they would of just grabbed land until the allies and Russians came into contact, which was pretty much what happened.

Wasn't final settlement agreed in Sept 1990?

But it's not over. It'll never be over.
