Odd post this...

Anyone here seen a vid/programme that showed in slow motion dogs running and described some dogs like cars with front wheel or rear wheel drive i.e. to demonstrate oversteer and understeer. I vaguely recall little terrier type dogs and greyhounds or equivalents.

Or am I just dreaming this in some kinda weird trippin sequence...

I think you're thinking of Top Gear when they raced the MX-5 against the greyhound?

Edit: Though there wasn't any slow motion action going on. So maybe it was a different programme.

I remember this vaguely. Although at this time of the hour cannot for the life of me remember what it was.

I don't know but when our dog got hit by a Golf he didn't half run fast on his fronts with the back legs trailing limp.

He is now very well with all his legs working fine.

Funny, I always thought that they were 4x4's

Our Yorkies are definitely 4WD. They drift on tiled floors just like a 4WD r/c car. Similar wheelbase too. hehe

Our Springer (Lola - sportscars not showgirls biggrin ) is definitely 4PD (4 paw drive), she steers off all corners and makes great use of understeer and oversteer. She's quicker than bigger dogs over a distance as whilst she's not the fastest on the straights her cornering is fantastic!

Ditto for our springer. Our Golden Retriever, on the other hand, suffers from chronic understeer, he can match the springer for straight line speed but stands no chance in the corners.

My two run a sort of Haldex system.

The Lab would appear to have active yaw control as well!

my dads westie is definatly rear wheel drive. Suffers from cataclismic power on oversteer..... Think he might be running some sort of live rear axel on leaf springs....

(it was Top Gear episode you where thinking of)

Our whippet starts off as a rear wheel then converts to 4x4 when at speed smile

Our collie became front wheel, when her back legs became weak.

Regards the programme afraid I don't recall it.

My goldie has significant oversteer - but that's because we're cruel and have really slippy wooden / tiled surfaces everywhere. She also has problems with emergency stops from full speed, uses her tail as a twirling air brake but often not effective enough to prevent a head-on with a tree/fence-post/small child.

Very funny to watch though.

My mums Westies are 4pd but with a split of 60/40 to the rear, So slight oversteer but generally manage to caress the apex. The Paterdale/staff/collie pedigree cross (mongrel) is a hybrid, has a low speed Fpd engine but over 30 doggyleptons becomes a wildly oversteery Rpd beast. wink

I have put more thought into working that out than into my work this morning. biggrin

Labs are a kind of split traction with a slight rear bias, but they can vary the grip to send more power to the paw with best traction. (Active Paw control). Probably combined with a dog clutch gearbox.

The seem to have some sort of LSD system fitted too.

Can't remember the programme name, but I think thay showed that an Elephant is "4WD" while dogs & cats were "RWD"

My old cat was really unstable under braking on slippery surfaces and often used to spin out of control.

She did however have good grip on carpet, I can only assume due to her studded tyres.

I would say that Terriers tend to be front-wheel drive (i'm thinking particularly of Jack Russells), but that bigger dogs tend to be RWD.

My old dog - sort of half-sized wolfhound mixed with a greyhound lurcher-thing was definitely RWD, and most comfortable tearing over rough terrain - a bit like a Rothmans Prodrive Porsche rally car...

My Shepherd who is now 12 is FPD only now and kinda drags her rear end around, she has no traction control and oversteers everywhere

Now the cocker is 4PD and handles like a demon even in the wet... Only looses traction in snow and mud and hasn't quite worked out how to handle these yet.

Now cats....

My Akita Cross is fwd, awesome traction and control, does suffer from slightly overactive springs.
My Neo Mastif has the suspension conrol of a 2CV and the steering cababilty of a rail dragster.

Weren't hyenas FWD, despite being a type of dog though ?
