A serious (if odd) thought from me this morning

I see various chaps walking around in their quilted Barbour jackets with mustard trousers, some get away with it too in an 'old money' or 'country gent' style. I'll admit that I think it looks just right when in a classic Range Rover or old Bentley.

Anyway, I wouldn't suit the look at all and many more wouldn't either. Is this type of attire strictly for the in-bred, old money types or is it all a fake look to give the impression of owning a country estate?

What's the criteria for owning (and getting away with) such clothing?

I haven't bought any. I've wanted some for years but I don't quite pull them off.

It's almost like you need to show a suitable bank statement before being allowed to purchase.

James May, Stephen Fry, and James Hewitt could get away with it.

From your list of cars I would suggest that you only wear them when you're driving the Mercedes, at night biggrin

I think if the person in question is 30+ then it's the former. <30 it's probably the latter.

They don't really get away with it. They still look ridiculous but you forgive them because their parents were clearly first cousins and you feel sorry for them.

You can tell the fakes by their shoes. The proper down at heel land owning gent will be wearing Church's (or Barker perhaps) shoes. The wannabe's wont go to the expense.

Mustard trousers?

It's not so much a case of 'how posh' as opposed to 'how old'

Actually, thinking about it, aren't the people that get away with wearing them, also of the same set as those that get away with coming out of the toilet in a country pub with said trousers covered in drips of piss? biggrin

I think his allegance lies with Farah after they signed him up on a multi-million pair 'slacks' contract as their poster boy.

I have no chin - very easy to get away with.

As someone else said, all comes down to the accesories and how worn.

Suede chukka boots, well worn button down shirt, barbour quilted jacket. Happy days.

Box fresh, top to toe Hackett. No, look like some Essex chancer.

Red jeans have the same rules. wink

Around these parts it's the norm to see people wearing this attire. It's poular in the horse racing/breeding sect.

Same people stick a "silver" horse to the bonnet of their Audi/Passat/Volvo estate. Insert :wker: smiley.

Stains are nicely disgused if you do though.

Anyway, about the ratio of "Posh" [/SIC] to troos.

Posh people do not refer to themseleves as posh - this is a term for the new money or commoners. In my experience, people I know who wear mustard trousers 'just do', they would also not give a second thought to reach into the closet for a silky paisley cravat or red socks and brown brogues along with the mustard slacks. They are usually touched by a hint of madness too. Which I find quite endearing.
