and putting them together. How do they put the vertical bit up and how do they locate the bits that make up the vertical bit on top of each other?

(was watching one crane moving other bits of crane around the crane yard next to the M1 just north of Sheffield Meadowhell and wondered)

There is a frame that sits on the outside, they jack up the crane and insert a new piece at the bottom.

Cheers.

ETA...although do yo know anything about the bloke shifting the "bits" around in the crane yard..there are lots of stacks made up of the smaller bits and he was moving the little bits around onto different stacks (from what I could see as i drove past)....it was swinging around loads, and he had 4 tubes to locate?

Actually....maybe he was just lifting it off, not putting it back on...

you mean in a 'chicken and egg' kinda way?

Like, how did they get the first crane up?

Fist of God is my guess. Or Egyptians. But not in Sheffield.

It is really cool to see, I should imagine on You Tube there will be speeded up footage of this.

how do they do the ones at the top of the tall buildings?

Like the one in Dubai?

Same principle and then fly it down piece by piece? What about the tops bit which is quite heavy (too heavy for a helicopter)?

like this:

they jack up the building as the structure rises during construction

then get dismantled and lowered down at the end of their programme

Good thread - wouldn't mind playing in one (crane) for a few hours. Only need to overcome my fear of heights now...

Does the whole crane come apart and not just the tower section?

I assumed the top setion would be too heavy to simply lower down

Very interesting watching a crane coming apart. One thing that I found particularly appealing was a crawler crane removing its own tracks. Sort of like how you would kick off your own shoes at the end of the day. hehe

A construction firm I worked for as a teen had a couple of these Manitowoc crawlers used for lifting bridge spans. Very versatile beasts. If they need to lift higher or span a wider gap they would just add more bits of lattice boom, if they need to lift heavier weight, just add more counterweight on the back.

Apparently the crane lifts up a smaller crane which is then used to dismantle the bigger crane, and this process continues until the bits of the last crane are small enough to be taken down in the lift!
