Fire safety officers....

Are they geeks with clipboards who are hated, or upstanding members of the community who you trust to help you prevent your building from burning to the floor?
Im thinking about becoming one but if they are seen as geeky ,mummy makes your breakfast types, then I think I will pass.
They're usually the kind of people that cant make a single decision on their own without asking their 'online community friends' what they should do/think.....Im thinking about becoming one but if they are seen as geeky ,mummy makes your breakfast types, then I think I will pass.

I think people involved in health & safety are generally viewed as a necessary evil. This varies from some people thinking it's great that there are people making sure they don't hurt themselves to others who think they're a waste of wages who are just there to stop them doing their job in the way that they want.
You've got to decide how important it is that people like you. It sounds like you're far too arsed what people think, if you can become a fire safety officer & better yourself & get more wages as a result does it really matter if some people feel pissed off by the very sight of you? If I could get on with everyone at work that'd be great but I don't go to work to kiss everyones arse & if my job involves stepping on some peoples feet from time to time so be it.

Who says they have to be a stereotype? I was one once. Its true there are some arses who try to insist on scheduled drills happening even if it's raining as "it could be raining on the day of a fire" but if there's enough of you to say "fIm thinking about becoming one but if they are seen as geeky ,mummy makes your breakfast types, then I think I will pass.
k off to that I'm not wanting to get wet either" you won't all be perceived as arses!Re looking like an arse - I argued that it would be hyocritical of us to tell people to leave without gathering personal possesions whilst we went for hi-vis gear. Everyone knew who we were anyway.
Most companies are glad to have sensible volunteers for potentially responsible roles, and if you get paid extra that's good news (I never have).
I have enjoyed training days though, getting to put out different types of fire and you do learn some useful and interesting stuff.
Two that stick, Powder Extinguishers not recomended for kitchens as the speed they discharge the powder you'll likely incapacitate yourself in an enclosed environment.
Discharging large extinguishers, place on the ground against your leg before squeezing the trigger for the first time, as in the event of it being faulty and exploding you'll only severly damage your leg! (not sure if that's true)

I was at a clients business and a firetruck pulled up and out jumped five firemen. "We are here to carry out a fire saftey check"
Receptionist: "Sorry, the person you need is busy. You'll have to make an appointment"
Firemen: "Ok"
and off they popped.
What a waste of man power and money.

I was volunteered to do it at work - just consists of doing some checks on the equipment and when an evacation is requires sheperding people out and counting people etc - i dont mind TBH
There is another guy higher up than us who is responsible for all the raeal stuff like fire alarms etc which carries with it some responsibility if it goes tits up.

My dad was a fire safety officer - at a chemical processing plant!
Somewhat adds a new meaning to scary crap! Some of the stories that I heard about stuff was quite amazing. Now, I do not claim that they are all true, but hey they made a good story at the time. And when a fire could blow up the site, the nearby main road and render around about 2KM diameter area as polluted, his job was fairly important.
Was he a nightmare and a stickler for the rules? Damn yes, got on with most people though. Not a 'tabbard wearer' though.

Its called a familiarisation audit, the fire crews do it so they know the site and risks prior to entering a building. Receptionist: "Sorry, the person you need is busy. You'll have to make an appointment"

It ensures their safety and that people and assets are dealt with properly in the event of a fire, I find it strange that you think it’s a waste of time, that instead of sitting in the fire station doing f
k all, they are out and about checking that companies do what they should and making their own and YOUR job safer. I have requested familiarisation audits, a fire crew spraying water on 4tonnes of molten metal and 11kv electrical gear is not really advisable, it puts my guys and their own lives at risk. By being informed, they know who to contact prior to entering and where there are hazards within the building.
My last encounter with an FSO to the best of my recollection.
FSO: "Is that your petrol can?"
Yours Truly: "Yes, I just bought it this morning. It´s brand new and has never had petrol in it. I am taking it home tonight"
FSO: "You´ll have to remove it, it´s a fire hazard"
YT: "It´s made of steel"
FSO: "Yes, but it´s a fire hazard"
YT: "It´s brand new and has never had petrol in it"
FSO: "It shouldn´t be inside the building"
YT: "My desk is a more flammable. Do you want me to get rid of that too?"
FSO: "No need to be bloody clever. Just get rid of the petrol can"
YT: "OK, fair enough"
