I have the 'joy' of a mother in law who is a fully paid up member of the 6000yr old earth/creation brigade and believes exactly what drivel she is told by the good folk in her church (Evangelical, iirc ), and that of the bible - word for word.

As far as she's concerned it all happened as it is in the bible...when having a reasoned discussion about alternative possibilities she refers back to the 'good' book.

When confronted about dinosaurs and whether god made them, too, she says, "well they aren't in the bible!" What? So they didn't exist??? No comment was forthcoming.

Then there's the amazing Bombardier Beetle, which according to some folk could never have evolved as it would have blown itself up. FFS, what nonsense!

Thankfully my wife is not a paid up member to the same club as her mum (we wouldn't be married if she were!)

What are your thoughts on the 6000yr old earth and 'creation'?

Cheers,

C.

Just looked up the Bombardier Beetle. Class. Like the big bugs on the Starship Troopers film.

god bashing?

Who said anything about god bashing?

Just because some points of view are different to the good book doesn't make a thread one of the god bashing variety.

The mental Gymnastics these reality deniers have to do to believe what they believe are beyond my comprehension. You cannot defeat them with logic or appeals to reality or common sense, as they don't have any.

My mother is also a paid up member of the god squad, though not of the 6000 year old earth batallion.

Her view actually makes quite a lot of sense (about the 7 day creation, miracles et al) - we know a lot more than they did back then, so things that are easily explained nowadays would have been miraculous in biblical times. Equally in many of the stories it is the point rather than the words that matter, hence "The Earth was created in 7 Days" doesn't neccessarily mean in 7 days per se, it was just an easy way of explaining it.

Of course I think we can all admit that actually the earth was created from the body of the giant Ymir...

The modern alternatives to religion don't require mental gymnastics?

If you think these people are bad, you should have a look at the Flat Earth Society.

It's hilarious. Most people on the forum are trolls, but a fair few of them seem to genuinely believe the earth is flat.

There are some seriously deluded people out there!
Indeed. In fact I shall mention the flat earth and see where we end up!

I used to be a very devout Christian (I got better).

The thing you have to remember is that people who are in that state of mind are willing to twist or create any logic or explanation in order to hold onto the "truth" that pretty much holds their world together. I cringe when I look back on Philosophy classes where I genuinely argued that God was able to do the logically impossible (four sided triangle and such like) to answer any difficult questions.

While I won’t be awarded a PhD from Oxbridge any time soon I do credit myself with above average intelligence, but my fear of having to reassess my entire world view blocked all logic for several years.

My advice would be to let it go because someone who has such an ingrained level of belief cannot be helped unless they open their mind and begin to question it themselves. It really is a scary decision to renounce your faith.

No they don't, just a modicum of intelligence.
Can we help with anything else?

I couldn't think of a succinct term for it, but there's a lot of god vs. brains threads on here with some serious lunatics, the best one being the jehovahs witness one.

Can't we just ask MBH what happened 6000 years ago. I believe he was best man at Adam and Eves wedding.

Ahh, yes, there we have it.

I've tried this line of approach and all I get is something along the lines of "well, they don't REALLY know how old it is, do they. They are guessing! How can they tell if this radio carbon dating actually works, or not? Were they there?"

After 6000 years though, petrol would still just be dead animals...

+1
I had one of them trying to tell me the universe was created in some sort of "big bang."
When I pointed out to him that this required the universe to be at least ten times more massive than it is, needed sub-atomic particles that they could find not even a hint of after nearly forty years searching, and would still break the fundamental laws of physics, he stared at me like I was the ignoramus!!!
