Just been watching a TV programme about an HMRC vessel stopping ships and looking for fags.

The vessel costs millions of pounds to buy, and millions more to upkeep. The crew will also cost millions of pounds in salaries.

That's three lots of millions of pounds that Joe Taxpayer has to pay - for some fags to be confiscated and incinerated.

Frankly, why are we bothering? Don't we have better things to spend our National Debt on - like looking after our old folk - who've paid tax all their lives?

Erm, don't you understand, the fact that you've watched a TV programme about it should tell you.
Bit like Road Wars.

You're right, but it still obviously happens. If they sold the fags to raise money for something useful I wouldn't mind so much!

What was the programme, and did they name the vessel?

Some idiot didn't keep the fags in the bonded store where they are supposed to be, so they get confiscated. 'Tis the law, but being a sailor if it were me I'd have just given them a bking and sent them on their way.
