The nurses have been great, but we've now been sat here for 9 hours for a doctor to come and talk us through the results which should take all of 5mins and then we can go home!!.
Worst thing is a doctor came to the ward and we were next to be seen but she left as it was the end of her shift. And I mean to the minute. The nurses have said they can't believe it!

Sounds terminal...even a Doctor couldn't bare to tell you the news!!Worst thing is a doctor came to the ward and we were next to be seen but she left as it was the end of her shift. And I mean to the minute. The nurses have said they can't believe it!

That sucks :-(
Was the doc supposed to be for you or was she just a ramdom? I wouldn't see a new patient I didnt know at the end of a shift either-might take hours!
If it isnt anything serious I'd echo what was said above, just go, they'll call if they need you, and if was urgent they'd already be there.
People often see the hospital as a prison, take back control!

Count yourself lucky. I had the pleasure of a hospital bed for six weeks with a Hickman line in my chest. Getting a doctor to stop and talk was a minor miracle.Worst thing is a doctor came to the ward and we were next to be seen but she left as it was the end of her shift. And I mean to the minute. So safe to say after 10 hours you're not dying
Just because the patient survives after 10 hours doesn't mean they'll survive after 11.
My experience of the NHS wasn't that great I have to say. I was in A&E for a long time waiting to be seen by someone who could diagnose the real problem and make a decision.
The nurses were great and did the best they could but it took way too long to get a consultant or doctor to spend enough time to perform a proper diagnosis. In the end, after 9 or 10 hours, a doctor came along and worked out I had appendicitis. I was operated on immediately as it was rupturing by then.
Oh, the fun I had eating NHS food and avoiding discarded needles on the floor for 2 weeks while I recovered.
Don't misunderstand me though. I have the utmost respect for nurses and the vast majority of doctors and consultants. The problem lies with the wasted investment, bad management and generally poor admin the NHS has suffered from for years now.
Sorry, but I wasn't impressed.
Well I have to be in hospital for around 5 days a month, I also have medical workers visit me 1-2 day a week, that's 9-13 working days out of 20 days each month..
I think the NHS despite it's very rare failings is the best thing since sliced bread and its workers are some of the most dedicated and committed people I have ever met.
Still your five hours once every ten years must be a right pain in the ass.
Eta thats not to say there aren't areas that can't be fixed but in general the population moans like they are paying for a private doctor.

Unfortunately we were told we couldn't leave until a doctor had seen us to discuss the results. We went through 2 staff changes until we were seen. Even more unfortunately our local hospital is one of the worst in the country according to stats and has been in the media only recently. The place does have a run down Bulgarian orphanage feel to party of it.
Don't get me wrong, I don't expect first class red carpet treatment like some people do from the nhs, but when nurses and even doctors openly criticise the system and other members of staff something is definitely not right.
Oh, and private health care wouldn't cover what we were there for.

Well it's not as if it's free! We all pay £2,000 a year for the NHS so it's perfectly reasonable to ask whether we get value for money from it.siscar said:

Its a bit like buying insurance really, at least it comes out of your gross income not your taxed.
I picked up a prescription last week for 3 medicines cost me 21 quid and change
last year I was living in canada the same 3 meds cost me 400 bucks.
The NHS is a jewel we need to polish. Ive worked within it for more than 20 years and it is a much fitter organisation now than it was

Its a much more expensive organisation, and far too much of that money goes in administration, which is less fit than it used to be.It needs a lot of polishing.

Always leave some kind of handle on the thing you're just about to stick up your bottom*. A&E visits and unsympathetic NHS staff encounters will be reduced. Worst thing is a doctor came to the ward and we were next to be seen but she left as it was the end of her shift. And I mean to the minute. The nurses have said they can't believe it!

As long as i can remember(1987) departments have been subject to annual "efficiency" savings of 2%. On that basis it must be more efficient than it was then.
