selling a phone on ebay and got two messages:

1. hi would you take £70 as a buy it now
2. Hi would you take £45 and end the acution now?

1. I thought fair enough. the market price seems to be 90-110 and with 5days left on the auction (which was started at .99 and no reserve) I thought it's a fair punt. I replied with a no thanks and I would rather wait.

2. The second one I was going to reply with the same manner but I can't help but think. How many messages must the person send before they get a "hit" to make all their efforts worth it? Also, if I send a polite "no thanks" to a completely pisstaking bid, I have done nothing to deter him from doing it again and so he will carry on messaging people and wasting their time (all my opinion of course and this subject can probably be argued and expnaded upon in a separate thread)

Anyway, since I couldn't come up with anything wittier and more subtle than "since I have just said "no" to someone offering £70 for it, what do you think?"

I ask for your help.

A nice witty not overtly abusive but with a bit of a bite response please?

I normally respond "If you think it will only reach £45, then bid £45 and you'll get it."

I just had a similar experience.

Ive got something large for sale for 45 pounds. I mention in the listing it is pick up only and also it says collection only under postage.

I get an email saying this:

Will you take £30 if i pick the item?

i assume he can only mean that if he picks the item up, he will give me £30 for it.

Considering its collection only, Id say that offering to come and pick it up isnt really a bartering tool.....

I said no.

i was selling a car on e-bay a few years ago, reserve price was 5,000 pounds, Was a modified Cupra so back then 5,000 was bottom line for one of those. Had loads of cheeky e-mails with people asking if i'd take 2,500 cash etc. I used to reply by saying,

"Thanks for your offer, but at this moment in time i'm not breaking the car. Just out of interest, which bit of it did you want for 2,500?"

To be honest i wouldn't bother replying, I don't. However, if you must, ask him if he wants the shirt from your back also.

Just ignore it, that will give a fairly clear message.

Say "I'll take £45 as long as you throw in some anal with your mother to bump it up to £55"

Have you considered his mother may be 80 or 90 years old?

Imagine the mess.

Exactly, the odds are, the ebayer is not in their teens, so thier mother is not like mrs Stiffler.. anymore.

Oh FFS chaps, does everything in here have to go one way?

It's sunny, I'm in a good mood, I usually let things slide but come on now. Back on topic eh?

Ok, that's actually quite funny.

So why not reply "look, I asked a few online friends for help in constructing a witty reply to your ridiculous offer, however as is normal with this site, the thread degenerated and the topic will probably close, so it seems my only option is to bum your mother"

That is actually what I think he should write.

so please don't bin me.

I don't see a problem with this.. I have done it before when something has not moved from the start bid for 5 days.

I got a set of wheels this way, under the amount they wanted, just said I can pop over and pick it up today with cash..

Its just business, its how things work. I do this in certain shops too (like buying a load of tiles/decking etc) More often than not you get a good deal.
